Ducks Send Seniors Off With 5-2 Win
04/19/15 | Women's Tennis
EUGENE – The Oregon women's tennis team gave its seniors a perfect sendoff on Sunday, defeating Idaho 5-2 at the UO Outdoor Tennis Courts. UO wrapped up the regular season 11-10 overall and 4-6 in Pac-12 play.
It's the third time in four year's Oregon has concluded the regular season above .500 and its first of many under first-year head coach Alison Silverio.
How It Happened: With senior day looming in the air, the Oregon (11-10, 4-6 Pac-12) underclassmen made sure they sent their seniors out with a win, dominating their Idaho counterparts 6-2 at No. 1 and No. 3 singles to give the Ducks the doubles point.
The top UO doubles pair of Nia Rose and Alyssa Tobita, who are ranked No. 60 in the country, took a quick 1-0 lead and never looked back to cruise to an 8-4 victory. The dynamic duo are now second all-time in the Oregon record books for most doubles victories in a single season at 25-9, surpassing Dominika Dieskova and Daria Panova (2004-05, 23-12). The freshman duo will look to add to that at next week's Pac-12 Championships.
Sophomores Lina Åkesson and Paloma Gomez did the same thing to their foes at No. 3 doubles, dismantling the UI (13-8, 10-1 Big Sky) pair 6-2 after taking a 1-0 lead to start the match.
Nicole Long concluded her career at Oregon in dominant fashion, dropping just two games to Sophie Vickers 6-0, 6-2 and pushed her career singles victories at UO to 52.
Tobita then gave Oregon the 3-0 lead over the Vandals with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Emmie Marx at No. 2 singles.
Idaho picked up its first point when Galina Bykova bested Rose in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 not too long after Tobita wrapped up her match.
However, the Vandals didn't get to enjoy that point very long as senior Sofia Hager clinched the match for Oregon with a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 6 singles in her final match at home.
Every other court would wrap up within a minute of one another following Hager clinched the match as Oregon came out on top, 5-2.
What It Means: With the win, Oregon has done its part to give them a chance at earning an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament. The Ducks now await the results of other teams playing in conference tournaments and will have their fate in the hands of the NCAA selection committee.
Quotable: “Overall, this season was certainly a step in the right direction for our program. I'm proud of the team for being able to lay the foundation of great work ethic and character to build our culture of excellence. Today was a great way for the seniors to end their careers in the regular season and hopefully we have some more tennis to play ahead of us.” – UO head coach Alison Silverio
Up Next: Oregon will now rest up for a couple days before flying down to Ojai, Calif., for the Pac-12 Championships.
