
Oregon Falls Short at BYU

PROVO, Utah – The Oregon women's tennis team nearly upset BYU Saturday afternoon, but fell, 4-3, to the Cougars in a heartbreaker down the stretch.
How It Happened: The 67th-ranked Ducks (7-4, 1-0 Pac-12) did the best they could to rally in singles action, but eventually fell to No. 52 BYU in the end.
The Cougars (7-6, 1-2 WCC) took the first match in doubles play after Lina Åkesson and Paloma Gomez was bested by Meg Sheehan-Dizon and Morgan Anderson, 6-2, at the No. 3 slot.
Nicole Long and Marlou Kluiving's doubles match was left unfinished with the pair leading Niccolette Tran and Savannah Ware 4-3, after Nia Rose and Alyssa Tobita fell to Toby Miclat and Brittanie Eraso, 6-3, at No. 1 doubles.
After winning the doubles point, Erica Valimaki gave BYU a 2-0 advantage when she downed Paloma Gomez in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1.
The Ducks however charged back and actually went up 3-2 with three-straight wins from Long, Kluiving and Tobita.
Long took down BYU's No. 3 player, Ware, 7-5, 6-3 after a long battle in the first set before cruising to the win in the second set.
Soon after, Kluiving clinched her 12-straight singles victory as well as kept her dual record unblemished with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Miclat at the No. 4 position and tied things up at 2-2.
Tobita gave the Ducks some life at the No. 2 slot when she fended off Tran to win in three sets, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 and put UO on top 3-2.
The Cougars knotted things up at 3-3 when Anderson bested Lina Åkesson in three-set thriller, 7-5, 2-6, 6-1 at No. 5 singles.
In the deciding match, Rose was able to force a third set and had moment heading into the final set but lost a tooth-and-nail battle to Sheehan-Dizon 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 to give BYU the 4-3 win.
By The Numbers: Kluiving kept her winning streak alive and extended it to 12-straight victories while Long pushed hers to eight … Kluiving is still undefeated in dual play, checking in at 11-0 … The Ducks fell for the first time playing outdoors (7-1) … UO's dominant couple of Rose and Tobita fell for the first time since Feb. 8 … The freshman pair is 20-6 overall this season, good for fifth all-time in the Oregon history books.
Up Next: The Ducks will have a just about a week to recharge, before hitting the heart of their Pac-12 schedule. Oregon will first take on Utah (March 20) before facing off against Colorado (March 22).
