Ducks Trounce Broncos 6-1, Stevens Wins Ninth Straight
02/22/15 | Men's Tennis
EUGENE, Ore. – The No. 45 Ducks rolled over No. 65 Santa Clara 6-1 Sunday morning at the Student Tennis Center. Oregon won the doubles point in a landslide, and they used that energy the rest of the way in what was their seventh-straight home victory.
How It Happened: Head coach Nils Schyllander inserted Daniel Sardu back into the doubles lineup with Simon Stevens, and the two enjoyed an exceptional result with a 6-0 romp over the Broncos' Sebastien Mathieu and Michael Standifer at No. 3.
Just seconds later, Daan Maasland and Joey Swaysland teamed up to earn a 6-1 win on court two over Ilya Osintev and Sam Bertram of Santa Clara. Jayson Amos and Kevin Farin were close to earning a win at No. 1 singles (led 5-1), but their match was stopped with the point decided.
A fresh Cormac Clissold crushed Max Heerinckx of Santa Clara 6-0, 6-1 to give the Ducks a 2-0 lead in the match. Maasland finished soon after with a convincing 6-2, 6-1 victory of his own to put Oregon to within one of clinching the match (3-0).
Stevens secured the win for UO with a sound 6-2, 6-2 victory at the No. 5 position over Sam Bertram to give the Ducks a 4-0 lead.
Farin was the next Duck to win when he took care of Osintev on court two in straight sets 6-4, 6-2 to give UO the 5-0 advantage.
Santa Clara earned their only point of the match when Mathieu took down Amos 6-4, 6-4 on court four, but Daniel Sardu was able to win another three-set grinder at the No. 3 position 6-7 (10-8), 6-2, 11-9 to make the final score 6-1 in favor of the home team.
Big Picture: Even though the Ducks are still working their way towards the meat of their schedule with Pac-12 play still a month away, the two wins this weekend got the team back on track. The Ducks picked apart two quality teams and put the two losses from the previous road trip to bed. Oregon is now 7-0 in home matches this year.
Revenge Factor: The Broncos nipped the Ducks last season 4-2 in Santa Clara, Calif. The loss was just one of two non-conference defeats for Oregon last season.
Sizzling Stevens: The freshman is a perfect 9-0 in singles matches during the dual season. Eight of his nine victories have come in straight sets, and he is now 14-3 overall in singles play this season.
Quotable: Head coach Nils Schyllander on a 2-0 weekend…
“We've been practicing great for the past week and a half, and it really translated into playing good as a team over the weekend.”
Junior Kevin Farin on momentum from winning the doubles point…
“Last year when we played Santa Clara we lost the doubles point, and we know they have really good 1-3 players, so we knew that if we won the doubles point today we would have a great chance to win the match. That made us all relax and more free to play, to concentrate on our own tennis and not think about the score anymore.”
Next Up: The Ducks will pack their bags and head to Pepperdine for a match on Saturday, Feb. 28 at 2 p.m. and then at UC Santa Barbara on Monday, March 2 at 1 p.m. for likely their first two outdoor matches of the year.
