EUGENE, Ore. – Despite shooting 46.0 percent from the field, the Oregon women's basketball team fell, 72-52, to No. 12 ranked Arizona State on Sunday evening at Matthew Knight Arena.
The Ducks fell to 12-13 (5-9 Pac-12) with the loss while the third-place Sun Devils improved to 22-4 (11-3). Oregon is 5-0 in conference play when holding opponents under 70 points and 0-9 when allowing 70 or more points.
Stat Sheet: Jillian Alleyne notched her NCAA-best 23rd double-double of the season with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Lexi Petersen added 12 points on 6-of-13 shooting with six rebounds and Drea Toler scored eight with six assists.
How It Happened: The game started slow with the score tied up, 4-4, five minutes in. Both ASU star Sophie Brunner and Alleyne left the game with two fouls with more than 13 minutes left in the first half. Oregon led, 10-9, at that point but ASU went on an 11-2 run over the next seven minutes with Alleyne on the bench to take a 20-12 lead with 7:04 left before the break. Alleyne checked back into the game with the Ducks trailing, 28-17, with 4:49 remaining in the first half. ASU took a 39-25 lead into halftime. The Sun Devils went 5-for-11 from three in the first half while the Ducks shot 1-of-6.
In the second half, Oregon cut the ASU lead to single digits, 44-35, on an Alleyne layup with 13:08 left in the game. Oregon made it as little as seven on multiple occasions, but an Eliza Normen free throw and a layup took ASU's lead to 53-41 with 8:00 remaining. ASU continued to pull away and led 62-46 after a long three-pointer by Katie Hempen with 4:02 left to play before winning by 20 points.
Red Hot: Alleyne went 8-for-8 from the field against ASU after going 7-for-8 in Friday's win over Arizona.
Notable: Oregon shot 46 percent from the floor overall but went 1-of-12 from three-point range (8.3 percent) … ASU had a 42-29 advantage on the glass … ASU attempted 14 more field goals than the Ducks (64 compared to 50).
Records Watch: After grabbing 10 rebounds against the Sun Devils, Alleyne is now 90 rebounds away from matching Bev Smith's all-time UO record of 1,362. Alleyne has 1,272 in her career.
Up Next: The Ducks hit the road for the final time in the regular season, visiting Utah and Colorado next weekend.
