PULLMAN, Wash. – The Oregon women's tennis team turned in a number of fantastic performances on Saturday of the WSU Invitational, posting a 6-1 combined mark in doubles and a 6-2 combined record in singles.
How It Happened: The second day of action at the WSU Invitational began with two rounds of doubles. The Ducks' four doubles teams were impressive, only dropping one of their seven total matches.
In the Crimson doubles flight, Oregon duo Alyssa Tobita and Shweta Sangwan knocked off Maria Tavares and Ana Batiri of Idaho, 6-4, and Boise State's Bobbi Oshiro and Ari Paules Aldrey, 6-2, to maintain their perfect record for the weekend. Kennan Johnson and Marlou Kluiving had a similarly successful day, picking up a 6-4 win in their first match before a 6-2 win in their second to move to 3-1 for the tournament.
In the Gray doubles flight, Micheline Aubuchon and Paloma Gomez also posted a perfect 2-0 mark for the day defeating Portland's Saroop Dhatt and Emily Gould, 6-2, and Portland's Sarah Hellstern and Marina Reimers, 6-1.
Tobita, Sangwan and Aubuchon will each have opportunities to win their respective singles flights on Sunday after each were victorious in their second-round match today.
Tobita defeated Washington State's Maria Biryukova in a 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 match to advance to the Crimson flight championship while Sangwan also captured a three-set win over Barbora Michalkova of Washington State, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.
In the WSU flight, Aubuchon was a winner over Washington State's Holly Monahan, handling the Cougar, 7-5, 6-3.
Christi Woodson and Daniela Nasser each picked up wins in the consolation round of the WSU Invitational flight, and will compete against each other on Sunday for the consolation title.
Also victorious in consolation play was Johnson, who upended Radina Dimitrov of Portland in a 7-2 second set tiebreaker to clinch the straight-set win and move on the Crimson flight consolation final.
What It Means: For the most part, Oregon was consistent in both singles and doubles today. Strong performances throughout the lineup means several Ducks will enter Sunday's final rounds of play in a position to claim titles at their first fall event of the season.
Sunday Schedule: The final day of the WSU Invitational is set to begin with doubles at 9:30 a.m., before transitioning to singles at 10:30.
