
Maasland Moves on to ITA Regional Semis

SEATTLE, Wash. – Daan Maasland continued his lights out play today as he won his quarterfinal match and will play in the singles semis tomorrow at the ITA Regional Championships.
HOW IT HAPPENED: Pitted against Washington's Jake Douglas, Maasland easily won the first set 6-3. However, the second set was much closer as Douglas edged him to take it 7-5 and force the deciding third set. There, the Geldrop, Netherlands product asserted his dominance, taking it 6-2 to move on to the semifinals. He will face Stanford's David Wilczynski tomorrow at 10 a.m. at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
In doubles play, the Ducks had two pairs in the quarterfinal round earlier this afternoon. Daan Maasland/Simon Stevens won their match on a 7-2 tiebreaker over Cal duo Filip Bergevi/J.T. Nishimura to move on to the semifinal match.
Also in the quarters was Jayson Amos/Armando Soemarno. A new partnership this year, the duo had been undefeated up until today's contest. Mikus Losbergs/Kasparus Zemaiteles snapped that winning streak as the Sacramento State pair took the match 8-5.
In semifinal play, Maasland/Stevens faced off with Nils Skajaa/Vasco Valverde (San Francisco). The first set was determined by a tiebreaker, which the Don duo took 7-3 and they then carried that momentum over to the second set, winning 6-3 to solidify their place in the championship match tomorrow.
In consolation play today, Ethan Young-Smith played against Cal's Ryan Shen. After dropping the first set, 6-4, Young-Smith pushed Shen to a tiebreaker in second set, but lost 7-5 to drop the match.
UP NEXT: Monday's action will be the final day of the ITA Regional Championships. The Ducks will return home to for a few short days of practice before they head to Las Vegas next weekend for the Easley Memorial.
