EUGENE, Ore. ? A new starting lineup helped the Oregon men's basketball team buck its recent trend of slow starts, and the Ducks led wire-to-wire in an 83-70 victory over Delaware State before 5,530 in Matthew Knight Arena on Saturday.
How It Happened: UO coach Dana Altman has tried to push various buttons the last few weeks to reverse the trend of slow starts, and he hit on the right one Saturday. Veterans Joseph Young and Elgin Cook were paired with Jalil Abdul-Bassit, Casey Benson and Jordan Bell, and the group put together an early 11-0 run to give Oregon a 16-5 lead. The Ducks' advantage ultimately reached 36-14 before the Hornets closed the first half with a 13-2 run to get within 38-27.
Delaware Stare scored first after halftime to get within single digits at 38-29. Oregon answered with a 13-3 run to take a 51-32 lead, and again pushed the lead to 20 before the Hornets were able to stem the tide. They fought back within 65-55, a run Young ended with a three-pointer before Bell extended the lead with back-to-back dunks, the second a fastbreak alleyoop from Dillon Brooks.
Who Stood Out: Young was sharp for the second game in a row, scoring 23 points on 9-of-16 shooting. His five three-pointers were one off the season-high he established in Oregon's regular-season opener. Abdul-Bassit led three others in double figures with 12 points on 2-of-4 three-point shooting, and Ahmaad Rorie scored 10. Cook contributed a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, and Benson dished out a season-high seven assists. The new starters scored 34 of Oregon's 38 first-half points, and combined for 59 overall. At the other end, Abdul-Bassit and Rorie teamed up to limit Delaware State sharp-shooter Amere May to 16 points ? and just two in the first half ?three days after May scored 48 in a win over St. Francis Brooklyn.
What It Means: The quick starts to each half were encouraging signs, progress from a revamped roster that had identified that as a weakness and looked to address it. This was also a chance for center Michael Chandler to build on the seven minutes he played in his season debut Wednesday. The junior big man played 16 minutes, scoring five points and grabbing four rebounds as he works his way back from a knee injury.
Quotable: "We wanted to come out with a ton of energy, starting defensively," Benson said. "We got stops and were able to get out in transition. That was our focus."
"(May) liked to drive left a lot for a pullup," Rorie said. "But (the key was) just don't let him get going, really. He scored 48 last game, so just don't let him get going."
Up Next: The Ducks have a quick turnaround before hosting UC Santa Barbara on Monday in Matthew Knight Arena (6 p.m., Pac-12 Networks).
