Ducks Down Roadrunners Behind Middle Blockers

FRESNO, Calif. – A deep display of attacking helped the No. 20 Oregon volleyball team (5-3) defeat CSU Bakersfield in straight sets, 25-23, 25-22, 25-18, at the Fresno State Classic, Friday.
The Ducks had five players with five-or-more kills on the night, led by middle blocker Ariana Williams who had 12 kills on 21 attempts for a .429 hitting mark. The senior has now reached double digits in kills in the last four matches and is attacking at 49.4 percent.
Lauren Plum was setting up Williams, but also a whole lot more. Plum ended up with 36 assists, five kills on six assists and 10 digs. The double-double was her fourth of the season.
The two teams started with a hard-fought first set where each team traded points through the latter part of the set. With the score tied at 23, two CSU Bakersfield errors resulted in a win for the Ducks, but it was the strong play of the middle blockers Williams and Kacey Nady who helped put Oregon in position to win. Williams had five kills through the first set while Nady was perfect on her three attack attempts.
The Ducks' third middle blocker in the game, Serena Warner would make her presence later with three kills on four attempts and four block assists.
Oregon trailed a majority of the second set but ended on a 12-5 scoring run to take the set 25-22.
The path to a third-set victory was safer than the previous two for Oregon, which never lost its lead after going ahead 7-6. The match ended with the Ducks going on a 7-2 run to finish the Roadrunners off 25-18.
Oregon will finish the tournament with two matches, Saturday, first against Belmont at 10 a.m., and at 7:30 p.m., against Fresno State.
