01/20/13 | Men's Tennis
EUGENE, Ore.—The University of Oregon men's tennis team began its spring dual match schedule Saturday with a doubleheader against Portland State and Seattle U. The Ducks started the season off right as they swept both of their opponents in convincing fashion.
“For the first day of the season, I felt like we played pretty aggressively and pretty sharp. It was important to get these matches under our belt and get in the flow of the season. Doubles throughout the day was solid and we got the whole team some work in there as well in either singles or double. We are definitely much deeper this year than we have been in the past,” said head coach Nils Schyllander.
Competition began at 10 a.m. and the Ducks made sure to give themselves plenty of time before their next match at 4 p.m. as they completed a clean sweep of Portland State. In singles, Alex Rovello defeated Antoine Bechmann 7-5, 6-4 in the number one spot. Freshman Daan Maasland from the Netherlands won his first regular season collegiate match as he topped Connor Gilmore 6-2, 6-0. Sophomore Daniel Sardu picked up where he left off last season as he handled PSU's Stratton Gilmore 6-2, 6-1. Another freshman notched his first regular season victory for the Ducks today as Brent Chin took down Brent Wheeler 6-2, 6-0. Senior captain Aaron Clissold beat Abhinav Mishra 6-2, 6-0, while Michael Shaeffer beat Ian Risenhoover 6-3, 6-0.
In doubles, Sardu and Clissold defeated PSU's Gilmore brothers 8-2, while Rovello and Maasland beat Mishra and Wheeler 8-1, and Schaeffer and freshman Lova Randriamampandry topped Bechmann and Risenhoover 8-5.
The singles portion of the Seattle U dual match was all Oregon as well as all six Ducks won their matches. Cambier defeated Will Topp 6-1, 6-2, Maasland topped Kevin Lynch 6-3, 6-3, and Mullen beat Jason Bediones 6-3, 6-2 in the top three spots. Rovello won his match against Kyle Rapp 6-0, 6-2, while Sardu beat Flavio Malagutti 6-0, 6-2, and Chin took down Ian Clare 6-4, 6-1.
The Ducks also controlled the doubles portion of the Seattle dual match as they won all three matches once again. The top returning duo of Cambier and Mullen returned to action and defeated Lynch and Topp 8-3, while Sardu and Clissold beat Bediones and Rapp 8-4. Rovello and Randriamampandry came out on top against Clare and Malagutti 8-2. In all, the Ducks did not lose a single set in doubles all day long.
