EUGENE, Ore.— The University of Oregon men's tennis team played their second straight doubleheader Friday, welcoming the South Carolina Upstate Spartans and the Eastern Washington Eagles to the UO Student Tennis Center. The Ducks defeated the Spartans 7-0 and topped the Eagles 6-1.
“All in all it was a good day,” said head coach Nils Schyllander. “I think we improved as the day went on. We talked about some adjustments we needed to do after the morning and I felt like the guys responded. We played very aggressive, and I was very pleased with the performance of Sardu and Rovello today.”
The Ducks won their first dual match 7-0 and almost registered their third straight complete sweep, losing only a single set in the match. In singles, junior Robin Cambier led the way from the top slot, defeating Matthias Kidler 6-4, 6-4, while his doubles partner Jeff Mullen dropped his first set to Yvon Haessig 5-7, but came back with sets of 6-2, 10-6 to win. Daan Maasland won 6-2, 6-3 over Gonzalo Blanco, while Alex Rovello topped Viktor Selander 6-1, 6-1 and Daniel Sardu beat Jamie Yates 6-1, 6-2. Brent Chin rounded out the singles for Oregon, beating Carlos Tajes 6-3, 6-3.
UO was equally successful in doubles as all three duos won their matches. Cambier and Mullen defeated Kidler and Haessig 8-3 in the top spot, while Sardu and Clissold took down Blanco and Selander 8-4. Rovello and Maasland swept their opponents, Yates and Tajes, 8-0.
Against Eastern Washington, the Ducks kept up their stellar play as five of the six singles participants won their matches once again. Mullen fell in the top spot 4-6, 7-5 (5-10) while Cambier defeated Eduardo Martinez 6-1, 6-2 and Rovello topped Tomas Aranguiz 6-0, 6-3 on the top three courts. Maasland took down Kyle Koetje 6-2, 7-6, while Sardu swept Eduardo Bringold 6-0, 6-0, and Clissold won against Arturo Carpion 6-2, 6-0.
In doubles, Cambier and Mullen handled Cohen and Martinez 8-2 on Court 1, while Rovello and Maasland topped Aranguiz and Koetje 8-7 on Court 2. Sardu and Clissold defeated Bringold and Carpion 8-3.
“We have a very important week of practice coming up as we have two very good teams in DePaul and Nevada coming in. This is a group that we feel good about right now and we're excited to get back out there again next weekend,” added Schyllander.
