Ducks Rebound With 7-0 Win Over Portland State
02/06/12 | Women's Tennis
EUGENE, Ore. - The University of Oregon women's tennis team dominated the Portland State Vikings on Sunday, winning every set they played en route to a 7-0 sweep. The Ducks (4-2) combined to take all 12 sets played in singles, as well as the three opening doubles sets.
"It was a good day for us, "said head coach Paul Reber. "The girls came out ready to play and ready to take care of business. Anytime you can limit the number of games your opponents win, it's a good thing."
The Ducks received four dominating performances in singles play headlined by freshman Sofia Hager and senior Trudie du Toit at No. 3 and No. 4 singles, respectively. Hager took down the Vikings' Marina Todd 6-0, 6-0 while du Toit downed Alexa McDonald 6-0, 6-0. Elsewhere, freshman Haley Driver and sophomore Rabea Stueckemann fared equally as well in a pair of 6-0, 6-0 victories over Nayanatara Vadali and Emily McClaren, respectively.
At the top of the singles lineup for the Ducks, juniors Julia Metzger and Patricia Skowronski downed their opponents in swift fashion. Metzger, the Perrysburg, Ohio native, defeated Marti Pellicano 6-0, 6-1. Skowronski, competing at No. 2 singles, took down Megan Govi 6-1, 6-1. In total, Oregon yielded just three games to Portland State.
In doubles, du Toit and Metzger got back to their winnning ways. The Oregon duo won in resounding fashion defeating Portland State's Todd/McDonald 8-0. At No. 3 doubles, Driver/Stueckemann trailed 1-2 before rallying to win six of the next seven games to win the match 8-3 over Vadali/McClaren. Rounding out the clean sweep was Skowronski/Hager who defeated Pellicano/Govi 8-1.
"Mentally, I thought we did a great job of keeping our concentration and keeping with the task at hand," remarked coach Reber. "We're looking forward to the next two weeks where we can really ramp up our conditioning and play some challenging matches against each other."
The Oregon women will have a 12-day break from dual matches before returning to action against Seattle on February 17. Keep up to date with the Ducks at GoDucks.com for the latest news, notes, scores and recaps all year long.
