Oregon Ducks Down Seattle, 7-0
02/17/12 | Women's Tennis
EUGENE, Ore. - The University of Oregon women's tennis team defeated Seattle University, 7-0 Friday (Feb. 11) marking the second dual sweep in a row. The Ducks (5-2) have a day off before returning to the Student Tennis Center to face the University of Nevada on Sunday (Feb. 19) at 10 a.m.
"It was a good day for us after a 12 day layoff," said women's head coach Paul Reber. "The girls came out with a lot of energy and really took care of business. We'll get a chance to see Nevada tomorrow and be rested and ready to play them on Sunday."
Playing the third dual of their seven match home stand, the Ducks came out focused from the beginning in their first match in 12 calendar days. Led by junior Patricia Skowronski, Oregon locked down the doubles point before sweeping the singles. Skowronski, the Braunschweig, Germany native, competed with Sofia Hager at No.1 doubles for the seventh time this spring. The duo defeated Seattle's Katrina Schwab and Corinna Wurden 8-5 to move their record to 4-3 overall at the No. 1 spot.
In singles, Skowronski finished off Lindsey Newman in swift fashion 6-0, 6-1 to keep the momentum from the doubles rolling. Newman had been Seattle's best player thus far in the early season having already compiled a seven-match winning streak in singles.
Senior Trudie du Toit also had an impressive outing winning both of the matches she appeared in. The emotional leader of the team, du Toit played with poise and confidence in downing Seattle's Anna Lambert 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4 singles. Du Toit paired with junior Julia Metzger for the sixth time at No. 2 doubles improving their record together to 4-2 with a win over Newman and Lambert 8-2. Metzger's singles win at No. 1 singles over Schwab 6-1, 6-0 clinched the dual for the Ducks.
