EUGENE, Ore. - The University of Oregon women's tennis team wrapped up their two-match weekend by defeating the University of Nevada Wolfpack, 6-1 on Sunday (Feb. 19) at the Student Tennis Center on campus. The Ducks (6-2) finish the month of February having won three consecutive duals.
"It was a good match for us today I was proud of the way our girls competed against a tough Nevada team," said head coach Paul Reber. "I feel we're at a great point in the season and we're looking forward to the bulk of our matches coming up in March and April."
Senior Trudie du Toit set the tone for Ducks winning her third consecutive singles match taking down Nevada's Juliette Legendre, 6-3, 6-2. In doubles, the Abbottsford, British Columbia native teamed with junior Julia Metzger for their third consecutive doubles victory making quick work of Nevada's Michelle Okhremchuk and Rymma Maslova, 8-1. The Ducks have won every dual in which they have earned the opening doubles dual point.
Elsewhere in singles, Oregon's Metzger rallied from behind in the second set to force a third-set 10-point tiebreaker. Facing Nevada's Okhremchuk, the two battled in what turned out to be the longest and most grueling match of the day. The two traded powerful forehands amongst controversy over disputed calls to put on quite a show for everyone in attendance, as well as their entire teams looking on. In the end it was Metzger who garnered the No. 1 singles victory winning, 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (11-9).
"It was a big win for Julia with a lot of tension," added Reber. "For her to come back from a match point down is a great effort from her."
The Oregon women will have two weeks off before their next scheduled match at home against Ohio State University on Sunday (Mar. 4) at 11 a.m.
