SAN JOSE, Calif. - The University of Oregon women's tennis team bounced back from their first loss of the season by defeating the Spartans of San Jose State on Sun. (Jan 29), 5-2. The Ducks (3-1) wrapped up their three-match road trip in California by going 2-1 and now return home to Eugene for a seven-match home stand including the beginning of the Pac-12 Conference schedule.
The Ducks were once again led by their lone senior Trudie du Toit. Playing at No. 4 singles, du Toit set the tone with a dominant win over San Jose State's Isadora Busch 6-0, 6-1. In doubles, the Abbotsford, British Columbia native teamed with junior Julia Metzger to defeat the No. 2 Spartans doubles pairing of Jessica Willett and Erica Medlin, 8-1.
The 8-1 win in doubles was the story of the day for the Oregon women. All three Oregon pairings won 8-1 with Patricia Skowronski and Sofia Hager taking down Sebastiani Leon Chao and Chau Troung while Rabea Stueckemann and Haley Driver defeated Sandra Florea and Busch. The early doubles point propelled the Ducks into the singles portion of the dual with the momentum and confidence needed for their third match in as many days.
In singles, Skowronski broke out of her two-match losing skid by defeating Troung 7-5, 6-0. The Braunschweig, Germany native played at No. 2 singles for the first time this weekend. At No. 1 singles, Metzger fell to Leon Chao in a third set tiebreak 6-3, 1-6, 10-4. Wrapping up the top-half of the women's singles lineup, Hager lost at No. 3 to Medlin 1-6, 6-3, 11-9.
Where the top-half faltered, the bottom-half picked up the team. The Ducks won each of the singles matches at No. 4, 5 and 6. Driver defeated Willett 6-1, 6-3 while Stueckemann beat out Florea 6-4, 6-1.
"Our doubles was really good today," said head coach Paul Reber. "We started a little flat in singles, lost a couple ten-point tiebreakers. Overall it was a good weekend being able to get outside and play three matches."
The Ducks will travel home to face Stanford in their Pac-12 Conference opener on Sat. (Feb 4) at noon. Follow the Ducks all season at GoDucks.com for the latest news, notes, stats and scores.
