Oregon Women Fall in Santa Clara, 4-3

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The University of Oregon women's tennis team was narrowly defeated in the second of a three-match road trip at No. 71 Santa Clara University (2-1) on Sat. (Jan .28), 4-3. The Ducks (2-1) drop their first match against a ranked opponent this year.
The Broncos got off to a hot start taking all three doubles matches and earning what would prove to be the crucial first point in the dual. Santa Clara's Katie Le and Kacie Wagner took down Oregon's Patricia Skowronski and Sofia Hager 8-5 at No. 1 doubles. At No. 2 doubles, Kelly Lamble and Maggie McGeorge squeaked out the victory over Julia Metzger and Trudie du Toit, 9-8 (7). In the third and final doubles match it was the combination of Alexandra Zaniewski and Jessica Agra that took down the Oregon tandem of Haley Driver and Pascale Neubert.
The Ducks got a spirited effort from their singles players, but ultimately fell one match short. Oregon's lone senior, du Toit, set the tone with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over McGeorge. A second and third point came from Driver and Hager as they defeated Agra 7-6, 6-3 and Lamble 6-3, 6-0 respectively.
However, it was Santa Clara's dominance at the top that resulted in the Duck's first loss of the year. Le defeated Skowronski 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 singles while Zaniewski beat out Metzger 7-6 (2), 7-5 to shut the door on Oregon. Wagner chipped in for the Broncos by defeating Neubert 5-7, 6-1, 6-4 at No. 4 singles.
The Oregon women will travel to San Jose where they will take on the Spartans of San Jose State on Sunday (Jan. 29) to complete their three-match California trip. The Spartans (1-1) are coming off a 7-0 defeat to Santa Clara. Check back here at GoDucks.com for results and a recap of the match.
