Ducks Dominate in Opening Dual With PSU, 7-0

EUGENE, Ore. - The University of Oregon men's tennis team opened its dual season in dramatic fashion defeating the Vikings of Portland State, 7-0. The Ducks won all three doubles matches before taking all six singles matches in their first of two duals on the opening day of the spring season.
The opening day dominance was kick-started by the Oregon No. 1 pairing of junior Jeff Mullen and sophomore Robin Cambier. Having partnered exclusively throughout the fall, the Mullen/Cambier tandem picked up right where they left off after winning two different doubles titles in the fall portion of the schedule. Mullen/Cambier handled the Viking combination of Roman Margoulis and Alec Marx, 8-2.
In other doubles action it was Aaron Clissold and Daniel Sardu taking down Abhinav Mishra and Nate Chart, 8-2 while Alex Rovello and Douglas Mayeda defeated Nick Fracchia and Zach Lubek, 8-4.
The early doubles dominance translated into a quick and efficient singles showing from the Oregon men. Five of the six singles matches took just two sets with the Ducks only dropping a combined total of five games.
Mullen and Clissold showed early-season precision in their 6-1, 6-0 victories over Marx and Lubek respectively. Meanwhile, it was the trio of Rovello, Sardu and senior Sho Higuchi winning in equally impressive fashion 6-0, 6-1 over Fracchia, Mishra and Chart, respectively.
The lone singles match breaking the mold was the No. 1 matchup of Cambier and Margoulis. Margoulis, a redshirt-sophomore, stretched the court early making the Brussels, Belgium native Cambier work for every point. The result was a 6-4, 4-2 lead midway through the second set. However, it was Cambier who was able to rally and force a third-set tiebreak. With his teammates looking on, Cambier was able to take the third set 10-4 en route to taking the match 4-6, 6-4, 10-4 (T).
The Ducks will have a short break before taking the court for the second time against the Bobcats of Montana State. The afternoon dual will start with doubles at 5 p.m. at the Student Tennis Center behind McArthur Court.
