EUGENE, Ore. - The University of Oregon men's tennis team defeated the University of Idaho, 7-0. The win against the No. 56 Vandals marks the first Oregon win over a ranked opponent since Mar. 27 of last year when the Ducks defeated No. 53 Arizona 4-3 in Eugene. The Ducks (3-0) have yet to drop a duals point all year amassing a total margin of victory of 21-0.
"I thought we came out with great energy and were able to close out the doubles point and giving us the momentum and confidence going into the singles," said Oregon head coach Nils Schyllander. "Give Idaho a lot of credit for fighting back and not rolling over and making it a close match."
The Oregon men came out firing and playing with passion showing their opponent they wanted to win. The result was an early doubles point behind the undefeated tandems of Jeff Mullen and Robin Cambier (3-0) and Alex Rovello and Jose Izquierdo (2-0). Mullen and Cambier had to fight as the combination of Marius Cirstea and Jose Bendeck came in as the No. 23 ranked doubles team in the nation. Mullen/Cambier were not to be outdone improving their doubles record to 12-1 for the 2011-12 season by defeating Cirstea/Bendeck 8-5. At No. 3 doubles, Rovello and Izquierdo defeated Andrew Dobbs and Jake Knox 8-5 to assure the Ducks of the doubles point.
In singles, the Ducks picked right up where they left off winning all six of their singles matches. Oregon has yet to drop a singles match in the dual season improving to 18-0 with the sweep of the Vandals. Leading the way was Mullen whose three-set victory over Alan Shin 6-2, 6-7, 6-1 started off the scoring for Oregon. Rovello quickly followed by defeating Cirstea at No. 1 singles 7-5, 7-5. Rovello is now 2-0 at the No. 1 singles spot where he went 11-10 last dual season.
Freshman Daniel Sardu clinched the dual victory for the Ducks with a 7-6, 6-4 victory over Cristobal Ramos-Salazar. With the dual victory in hand, the Oregon men could have coasted to the finish. But that didn't stop Izquierdo, Aaron Clissold, and Cambier from finishing out hard-fought three set victories. Izquierdo, Oregon's lone senior competing Sat. (Jan 28), finished off Idaho's Bendeck 6-2, 6-7, 6-4. Clissold, playing at the No. 6 singles spot, took down Cesar Torres in a back-and-forth third-set tiebreaker 6-4, 6-7, (10-7). Finally, Cambier rounded out the singles sweep with an emotional victory over Amid Akbar 6-1, 6-7, 7-6. The Oregon men played in four three-set matches in total, winning all of them.
"I think all the fitness we've done is really showing and I was glad to see us win all of our three-set matches," remarked Schyllander. "I think our season is off to a good start, we're 3-0 with a quality win and we're excited to get out there tomorrow."
The Oregon men take to the courts tomorrow (Jan 29) against the University of Missouri-Kansas City. UMKC is coming off of a 4-0 defeat of Idaho. The match will take place at 11 a.m. at the Student Tennis Center behind McArthur Court. As always, the team invites you out to cheer on the Ducks and take in an exciting brand of tennis.
