01/30/12 | Men's Tennis
EUGENE, Ore. - The University of Oregon men's tennis team defeated the University of Missouri-Kansas City in resounding fashion on Sun. (Jan 29) to move to 4-0 this spring. The 7-0 win improves the Ducks combined margin of victory in dual play to 28-0. Oregon has yet to drop a singles match during the dual schedule.
"It was good weekend to get two wins," remarked head coach Nils Schyllander. "We came out a little flat in doubles today after last night's match. Once we got going, I was pleased with the way we closed everything out and didn't extend the matches today."
The Oregon men were once again led by sophomore Alex Rovello. At No. 1 singles for the third time this season, Rovello dispersed of UMKC's Nino Hasandedic 6-3, 6-0 for the first singles point. In doubles, the Portland, Ore. native teamed with senior Douglas Mayeda for the second time this season to take down UMKC's Guerin/Edwards 8-5. The Oregon duo is 2-0 while playing together. Rovello is a combined 8-0 in doubles and singles this spring.
At No. 1 doubles, the Ducks received a dominating performance from Jeff Mullen and Robin Cambier. The Oregon tandem, now 13-1 on the season together, cruised past Fleming/Patino 8-2. The No. 1 doubles pairing provided equally impressive singles performances today. Mullen took care of UMKC's Patino 6-0, 6-3 while Cambier downed Fleming 6-2, 6-2.
Aaron Clissold and Daniel Sardu were able to get back on track after their first loss at the No. 2 doubles position last night (Jan. 28) to the Vandals by defeating Hasandedic/Schoenhofer 8-5. In singles, Sardu battled UMKC's Cameron Schoenhofer for every point recovering from an early first-set deficit to win the match 7-6, 6-2.
Anchoring the Ducks today were seniors Jose Izquierdo and Sho Higuchi. Each made quick work of their opponents providing leadership to their younger teammates and new players demonstrating the mindset necessary to play matches on back-to-back days. Izquierdo was victorious over Gustavo Guerin 6-3, 6-0 while Higuchi took down Connor Edwards 6-0, 7-5.
The Ducks take to the road for the first time this spring as they travel to Denver to kick off the month of February. Oregon will face Denver on Sat. (Feb. 4) at 2 p.m.
"I just want to see how we respond on the road," said coach Schyllander. "We are comfortable here at the STC, but I want to see how our young guys and new players respond on the road away from home and our home crowd. Last year we had a our struggles on the road and I'm looking to see if we've matured as a team and see if we can play at the same level as we do at home."
