EUGENE - In fittingly dramatic fashion for a Comcast Sports Net NW TV audience, the No. 19 University of Oregon softball team (32-11, 4-7) jumped out to a 7-1 lead, then survived a three-run seventh by Oregon State to stake its third straight Civil War series win.
Oregon surged ahead early vs. OSU (18-18, 1-10) - thanks to four runs in the second inning, two in the fourth and another in the fifth - and guarantee it second straight series after taking two of last year's three meetings in Corvallis. In the fourth inning, freshman Courtney Ceo launched a two-run homer to center field - her fifth of the year - and was one of eight Ducks that hit safely once during the game. The Meadow Vista, Calif., native also added her first RBI of the game on a bases-loaded walk in the second inning.
UO's other three runs in the second stanza scored on a fielder's choice grounder by freshman Alexa Peterson to second base, another bases-loaded walk to sophomore Allie Burger , and an RBI single by sophomore Samantha Pappas .
Oregon's final run came on Kaitlin Vitek 's seventh homer of the season – a solo shot in the fifth inning and her second solo round-tripper in as many days.Other Ducks that hit safely once included senior Monique Fuiava , junior Kelsey Chambers , sophomores Kaylan Howard and Burger and freshman Kailee Cuico .
Duck starter, senior Brittany Rumfelt (5-0) won her first Pac-10 start of the season, struck out five, walked three, and allowed four hits and one earned run in five innings.Junior Samantha Skillingstad came in to start the sixth inning, and in her 1.2 innings, struck out two, walked one, yielded two hits, and two her of her three runs allowed were earned.
Junior Mikayla Endicott came in with the bases loaded in the sixth and two outs, and issued a walk and hit by pitch to her only batters faced.
With two outs and the bases loaded in the seventh, Moore entered the game and was rewarded with her second save of the year, thanks to Ceo's nifty snab on a one-hop smash to third base.
OSU starter Tina Andreana (5-9) lost for the second straight day, struck out one, walked three, gave up three hits, and all four of her runs allowed in the first 1.1 innings were earned.
Paige Hall pitched the next 2.2 innings, struck out one, walked one, allowed four hits, and both runs given up were earned.
Marina Demore worked the final two innings, struck out four, walked one, yielded one hit, and her run allowed was earned.
OSU's first run in the fourth inning came via a bases-loaded single by Emily Richardson to left field.
After an RBI double by Erin Guzy, Endicott followed and put two runners on which led to Moore's entry. OSU's final run came in the final at-bat, when after a Moore pitch skipped off the catcher's glove to the backstop, an errant throw by Peterson to home plate allowed a runner to score from third base.
Among OSU's six hits at the plate, Guzy went 3-for-4 with an RBI, and Ashley Sanchez (2-for-3) also had a multi-hit day.
Among Oregon State's six hits at the plate, Erin Guzy went 3-for-4 with an RBI, and Ashley Sanchez (2-for-3) also had a multi-hit day.
Friday's win raised second-year head coach Mike White 's record against OSU to 4-1 after Thursday's 7-1 series-opening win and last year's 8-3 and 6-5 victories. The Beavers took the other contest, 7-6 , in that span last April after at three-run Duck seventh inning nearly tied the game.
White also was part of UO's 2-1 series wins when he served as an assistant coach in 2003 and '04.
Looking ahead, Easter Saturday's finale will start at noon. Junior Duck Club members will receive free admission, and those that wear their Junior Duck Club t-shirt will also receive a giveaway item. After the game, Duck players will sign autographs for youth on-hand.
