EUGENE - The No. 19 University of Oregon softball team (33-11, 5-7) swept Oregon State (18-19, 1-11) for the first time since 1994, thanks to homers by Monique Fuiava
, Kaitlin Vitek
and Kailee Cuico
, and Jessica Moore
's second win of the weekend.
Topping the Beavers for the fourth straight time going back to last season, the Ducks scored three runs in the first inning, then tacked on two more in the third, another in the fifth and its last two in the sixth.
In the first inning of the 8-1 decision, UO hit back-to-back homers for the second time this season, thanks to two- and one-run shots by Fuiva and Vitek.
Fuiava's seventh four-bagger of the season caromed 25' high off the left field foul pole, and moved her into a tie for sixth all-time for UO (26) career-wise with former Duck Lindsey Welch. Her two RBI Saturday also moved her to 10th all-time among Oregon players in career RBI (96) and passed Jennie Cook (95).
Vitek's eighth home run of 2011 moved her into a tie with teammate Kelsey Chambers
for the team season lead, and was her third of the weekend after solo shots Thursday and Friday.
The Lynwood, Calif., native Fuiava also claimed her team-leading eighth game-winning RBI of the season – twice as many as the next-best players on the team (K. Chambers, Peterson – 4).
In the third inning, Fuiava singled and scored again on a double by freshman Alexa Peterson
that also scored Kelsey Chambers
who had walked the prior at-bat.
Freshman Kailee Cuico
accounted for UO's next run with her fifth homer of the season in the fifth inning – a two-out shot to right center field.
The Ducks capped their scoring in the sixth after Ceo and sophomore Kaylan Howard
reached on a single and error to open the inning. UO's top two hitters in the lineup came around to score on a grounder by Pappas that was booted by the second baseman, and a sacrifice fly by Vitek.
Peterson (3-for-3) enjoyed her second three-hit game of the season and led UO in hits. Fuiava (2-for-4, 2 RBI) added her 10th multi-hit game of the campaign – second-most on the team – and four others had single hits (Ceo, Cuico, Pappas and Vitek).
On the mound, sophomore starter Jessica Moore (17-6) won her second start of the weekend, and struck out two, walked three and gave up three hits in her five innings.
The Sutter, Calif., native also moved into a tie for 10th all-time for wins in a season for Oregon with Alicia Cook (2008), Amy Harris (2003) and Andrea Vidlund (2000).
Senior Brittany Rumfelt
relieved and in the final two innings, struck out three, walked none, and allowed two hits. Her lone run allowed came on a one-out homer in the top of the sixth to Audrey Roderfeld to left field.
OSU starter Marina Demore (7-6) retired only two of the first six batters, and was tagged with three runs - all earned - three hits, one walk and no strikeouts.
Tina Andreana pitched the remaining 5.1 innings, struck out two, walked four, yielded six hits, and four of her five runs allowed were earned.
For the three-game set, two Duck freshmen hit .500 and went 4-for-8 – Ceo (1 HR, 4 RBI) and Peterson (2 doubles, 3 RBI). Three others topped .300 – Pappas (.444, 4-for-9, 3 RBI), Vitek (.429, 3-for-7, 3 HR, 4 RBI) and Fuiava (.364, 4-for-11, 1 double, 1 HR, 4 RBI).
Now with four career Civil War victories, Moore staked an 0.57 ERA in her Thursday and Saturday wins and save Friday, struck out six, and walked eight in her 12.1 innings.
Rumfelt (5-0) claimed UO's other win in her first Pac-10 start of the season Friday. The Lakeport, Calif., native logged a 2.00 ERA overall on the weekend, struck out eight, walked three, and scattered six hits in her seven innings.
Team-wise, UO hit .329 (25-for-76, 3 2B, 6 HR) in the three games, while Duck pitchers held OSU to a .218 batting average (17-for-78, 3 2B, 1 HR) and handily won the ERA comparison, 1.67-6.22.
Earlier in the weekend, UO won by 7-1 and 7-4 counts to cement UO's second series sweep under head coach Mike White
– the first coming at home last year at home vs. then-No. 13 California (and UO's first ever in that series).
Last year under White's guidance, UO took the Civil War rivalry, 2-1, for the first time since 2007, and staked similar margins in his initial tenure as a Duck assistant coach in 2003 and '04.
Going back further in the two teams' most prolific rivalry, Oregon last beat OSU more than twice in a season in 1995 (5-1), while its other season sweeps came in 1991 (8-0), '90 (6-0) and '89 (4-0).
All-time in the 38 years of the action dating back to 1974, UO also won the series in 1993 (2-1), '92 (3-1) and '88 (6-2), while the series ended in ties in '99 (2-2), '98 (3-3) and '86 (1-1).
Looking ahead, Oregon heads to Tucson, Ariz., to face eight-time national champion and No. 7 Arizona (36-11, 7-5) for three single games, Fri.-Sun., April 30-May 1.
In other action around the Pac-10 this weekend, No. 2 ASU (42-5, 9-3) swept the former Pac-10 leader, No. 7 Arizona by scores of 4-0, 13-10 (5) and 6-1 in Tucson.
No. 11 UCLA (31-10, 7-5) beat No. 9 Washington (31-8, 6-6) twice - 4-0, 5-4 - then lost the finale, 4-3, in nine innings in L.A. on Saturday.
No. 12 Cal (30-9, 7-5) won the first and third games at home vs. No. 10 Stanford (32-10, 6-6) by 2-0 and 4-1 scores, and lost the second game, 2-1.
