ON TAP
Guess what's on tap this week: The very last Civil War to EVER be played at McArthur Court.
Yep, the Oregon women's basketball team will square off with the Beavers at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday to deliver the final Civil War showdown in the 83-year-old facility.
But before I divulge into the historical relevance of Saturday's face-off, the Ducks will be supporting a very important cause this weekend.
HAITI RELIEF EFFORTIn an effort to help raise funds for Haiti earthquake relief, “4 Haiti T-Shirts” will be on sale at Mac Court before and during the game. The UO women's basketball team will also be wearing the 4 Haiti T-Shirts during their pregame warm-up.
The 4 Haiti T-Shirts are currently on sale at the Campus, Moshofsky, and Court Café stores. The idea for the project came from UO student Greg Mills, and another Oregon student designed the T-Shirt. The shirt retails for $16, and $13.75 of that goes directly to Partners in Health, a Boston, Mass., non-profit.
Oregon would like to send a special thank you to Ted Norman, owner of Identity by Sew-On, who is providing the T-Shirt and printing for below cost. Ted has been a longtime partner with Duck Store, and he wanted to do his part for this special project. Also of note, The Duck Store is taking no money as it and its team members also want to help the Haitian people in this time of need.
CIVIL WAR HISTORY
Since
1977 Oregon and Oregon State have squared off 36 times at Mac Court,
and since 1975, the Ducks have a 30-7 advantage in the series in Eugene.
Over the years the game has proven to be a crowd pleaser, as the top four crowds in Oregon women's basketball history all belong to Civil War games. The record is still 9,738 from March 8, 1996, when the Ducks defeated the Beavers 69-60.
Top 5 McArthur Court Crowds
Rank Attend. Opponent Date Score
1 9,738 Oregon State 3/8/96 W, 69-60
2 9,087 Oregon State 3/10/00 W, 60-53
3 8,815 Oregon State 3/10/01 W, 72-60
4 8,260 Oregon State 1/29/99 W, 59-46
5 7,861 Arizona 2/21/99 W, 74-59
What's the highest point total Oregon has scored against Oregon State at Mac Court? That would be 82 points, in an 82-63 win on Feb. 9, 1990.
Will the Ducks top that number on Saturday? Well back on Jan. 9 in Corvallis, Oregon took care of the Beavers, 86-71. And remember what happens if Oregon scores more than 100 points? PERSONAL PAN PIZZAS FROM PIZZA HUT FOR EVERYBODY!
Also, check into Duck Talk with Steve Tannen on KUGN 590 AM, live on Friday morning from 8-9 a.m. Members of the women's basketball be team will be making an appearance and giving away tickets for Saturday's game.
So how do you get to see the final Civil War to ever be played at Mac Court?
Tickets are still available, and can be purchased by clicking HERE, calling 1-800-WEB-FOOT, or in person at the Casanova Center ticket office. Tickets can also be purchased at the McArthur Court ticket window 90 minutes prior to game time. The doors to Mac Court open 60 minutes prior to tip.
Also on Saturday, Oregon will take part in National Girls and Women in Sports Day. Fans can purchase one adult general admission ticket, and receive one free general admission ticket for a child.
And last but certainly not least, on tap for Saturday is: CHEER WITH THE DUCKS. The Oregon cheerleaders will hold this year's “Cheer with the Ducks” clinic on Saturday. The clinic is designed to give boys and girls from ages 5-12 a fun and exciting experience cheering with the University of Oregon cheerleaders. The clinic is highlighted by a performance at halftime of the women's basketball game vs. Oregon State.
The clinic runs from 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m., and the performance is during halftime of the 5:30 p.m. women's basketball game. Clinic registrants get free admission to the game along with a free T-shirt.
And one more thing:
HONORARY CAPTAINS
Lauri Landerholm will return to Mac Court for the second leg of the Civil War to serve as the game's honorary captain. Landerholm led the UO to two NCAA Tournament appearances with the Ducks, and during her senior season was named the Pac-10 Player of the Year in 1987. She is one of only two players in Oregon women's basketball program history to be given the honor. Landerholm was a three-time all-NorPac selection, and still holds the UO program record with 607 assists.
