California Defeats Ducks, 79-73
02/21/10 | Women's Basketball
BERKELEY, Calif. -- Taylor Lilley set the Pac-10 single-season record for 3-pointers and scored a game-high 22 points, but it wasn't enough for Oregon as the Ducks fell to California, 79-73, at Haas Pavilion.
Lilley was 4-of-6 from 3-point range, giving her 93 for her remarkable senior year, leading a furious comeback that came up just short.
DeNesha Stallworth and Alexis Gray-Lawson had 19 points apiece to lead Cal (16-10, 10-5 Pac-10). Nia Jackson (16) and Amanda Johnson (13) recorded double digits for the Ducks (16-10, 7-7).
Late in the second half, it appeared UO would successfully wear down the talented Golden Bears, who were visibly gassed with more than nine minutes to play. But enough stoppages due to fouls and timeouts, and some key points by Gray-Lawson pulled the host squad through.
UO nearly overcame a 51-28 rebounding disparity and shot 44.8 percent (26-of-58) for the contest. The Bears converted 40.6 percent (26-of-64) from the field, but made just 3-of-27 3-point attempts. They did make 24-of-32 free throws, while the Ducks were 13-of-20.
Oregon got within one at 58-57 with 11:19 to play, when Jasmin Holliday made 1-of-2 free throws. The score remained that way for more than two minutes until Jackson gave the Ducks their first lead with a pair of free throws and Johnson followed with a steal and a layup to make it 61-58 with 8:49 left.
Cal led 44-37 at the break, thanks to a hot shooting performance from the free-throw line. The Golden Bears made just one more field goal than the Ducks, but went a combined 10-of-11 from the stripe, compared to 1-of-5 for UO.
A game after struggling from the field, Oregon shot 46.9 percent (15-of-32) over the first 20 minutes, including 50 percent (6-of-12) long distance. Lilley had a team-high 13 points and was 3-of-4 on 3s.
Layshia Clarendon led all players in the first half with 14 points and four assists in only 13 foul-plagued minutes.
Down 17-9 early in the first half, Victoria Kenyon nailed a three and Lilley bombed one in after a steal off an inbound pass less than three seconds later to draw the Ducks within two, forcing the Golden Bears to call timeout.
After a Cal miss on the offensive end, Holliday scored off her own rebound to knot the game at 17-all.
The home side ran off the next 11 points to lead 28-19 with over 11 minutes remaining, but seven straight from Lilley, including her Pac-10 record-tying 92nd 3-pointer put the Ducks right back in the game.
UO would get within two before a 9-0 Cal run, and fought back within three on another occasion, but went to the locker room down seven.
