LOS ANGELES – It was another high-scoring affair, but again Oregon failed to maintain the uptempo pace in the second half and fell 104-80 to UCLA on Thursday night at Pauley Pavilion.
Oregon has now dropped its fifth in a row and is 12-8 on the year with a 3-5 mark in the Pac-10, remaining in a three-way tie for sixth in the conference standings. With the win, UCLA remains third in the Pac-10 standings with a 13-6 record and a 6-2 mark in conference play.
The Bruins outscored the Ducks 34-13 in the final 10 minutes of the game, and had a huge advantage in the paint, 58-26.
It was the frontcourt duo of Markel Walker and Jasmine Dixon that did the majority of the damage. Walker was just two assists away from a triple-double with 17 points and game highs of 14 rebounds and eight assists. Dixon partnered with Walker in the paint to score a game-high 20 points on a 9-of-14 shooting performance.
Oregon was outscored 54-33 in the second half, as the Bruins pulled away near the 10:00 mark. The Ducks had a brief 53-52 advantage after Nia Jackson converted two free throws, but that lead was erased by a 9-2 UCLA run that had the Bruins leading 61-55 with 15:40 to go.
Oregon again pulled close, 70-67 with 9:23 to play, but UCLA scored 10 unanswered points until Amanda Johnson finally knocked down two free throws. The 10 unanswered was part of a greater 16-3 run that put UCLA in the driver's seat, 86-70, with 4:31 remaining.
All five starters scored in double figures for the Ducks, but the Oregon bench was a combined 2-for-11 and was outscored 29-4 by the Bruins' bench.
Johnson led Oregon with 18 points, while Jackson had another productive night scoring in double figures for the fifth straight game with 17. The Seattle native was 9-of-10 from the free-throw line and led the Ducks with four assists and three steals.
Taylor Lilley added 16 points for the Ducks, while Micaela Cocks scored 14 and Victoria Kenyon chipped in 11 points, playing the entire second half with four fouls.
Freshman guard Mariah Williams added 15 points for UCLA in a starting role, and veteran Doreena Campbell had an all-around game with 17 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Off the bench, Nina Earl scored 11 for the Bruins, while Rebekah Gardner – former high school teammate of Oregon's Jasmin Holliday – added 10.¬
Holliday added 10 rebounds for the Ducks.
UCLA had a slight 50-47 advantage at halftime led by Walker's near triple-double of 11 points, nine rebounds and seven assists.
The first-half was a high scoring affair with both team's pushing fast-paces and full-court offensive attacks, while also each shooting similar percentages (.447 Oregon, .444 UCLA) from the floor.
The Bruins had the advantage in the paint, as Canepa picked up three early fouls and Kenyon was tagged with her fourth with 1:36 remaining until the break. In addition to Walker, Dixon added 10 points as the frontcourt duo helped UCLA double Oregon 28-14 in the paint.
Lilley was 6-of-9 from the floor and knocked down two three-pointers on her way to a first-half high 14 points. Johnson added 10 points for Oregon while Jackson had three assists.
The Bruins got to 14 second-chance points on 11 offensive boards, while outscoring Oregon's bench 15-4.
