UO Soccer Battles to 1-1 Draw with Colgate
09/04/09 | Women's Soccer
EUGENE, Ore. -- Senior defender Danielle Sweeney scored in the 82nd minute to equalize the match as the University of Oregon soccer team battled to a 1-1 draw with Colgate in a neutral-site contest Friday afternoon at Prentup Field in Boulder, Colo.
The result gave the Ducks a 1-1-1 overall record, while the Red Raiders moved to 1-1-1 on the year.
For the second straight match Oregon dominated statistically, holding a 36-6 shot advantage while registering 13 shots on goal to Colgate's three. UO's shot total was just three shy of the single-match school record (39, Portland State – 2001).
“We just didn't put the ball in the back of the net,” head coach Tara Erickson said. “It was just a lack of ability to finish. We worked hard at times, but we had a lack of production in the final third.”
Oregon put together eight corner kick opportunities while Colgate did not take a corner the entire match.
Colgate recorded the match's first goal in the 54th minute, an unassisted score by Jamie Herrmann. Oregon controlled the match but couldn't capitalize on a number of good scoring opportunities. UO out-shot Colgate 14-1 in the first half, and 29-2 over the first 90 minutes.
As the match entered the final 10 minutes of regulation, it was the combination of junior forward Jen Stoltenberg and Sweeney that evened the score. On a free kick from 20 yards out, Stoltenberg found Sweeney, who slid to connect with the ball and beat the keeper near-post for the matching score.
The Ducks out-shot the Red Raiders 8-4 in the extra time, but couldn't find the back of the net for the neutral-site victory.
Five Oregon players recorded four or more shots in the match, led by Stoltenberg who recorded a career- and match-high nine shots, four of which were on goal. Freshman forward Julie Armstrong had a career-best six shots, senior midfielder Teresa Bowns and junior midfielder Bree Rowe each had five shots, and junior midfielder Kirstie Kuhns added four shots.
Stoltenberg's shot total (9) ties her for second all-time at UO for shots in a single-match - matching former Duck great Nicole Garbin. The record for shots in a match is 12, held by Beth Bowler who set the mark against Portland State in 2001.
Sophomore goalkeeper Cody Miles had two saves in playing the full 110 minutes of the draw.
Colgate Jillian Kinter had a team-best three shots, two of which came on goal. Herrmann was the only other Red Raider to record a shot on goal, scoring on her only shot of the match. Colgate goalkeeper Ashley Walsh had 12 saves in the match.
Oregon (1-1-1) returns to action Sunday with a road contest against Colorado, with match-time scheduled for noon (PT). Live statistics will be available for the contest, courtesy of cubuffs.com.
