EUGENE - The University of Oregon volleyball team opened the second day of the Oregon Classic Saturday with another 3-0 win, this time over Eastern Washington.
The Ducks won by a count of 25-16, 25-11, 25-22 over the Eagles who won the Big Sky Conference regular season title again in 2008.
Senior outside hitter Sonja Newcombe paced UO in kills (12) and digs (9) and just missed her 35th career double-double - a category she leads active Ducks. The Lake Arrowhead, Calif., native also hit .320, while her two service aces tied her 2008 season high.
All-America senior middle blocker Neticia Enesi registered season highs in kills (8) and a team best in hitting this year (.636), while junior outside hitter Heather Meyers landed five service aces for the second straight match. Meyers also had seven kills and five digs.
Sophomore Dana Stephenson connected on a career-high five kills - four of which came in the first set - and also claimed the first solo block of her career in the same stanza.
Two Ducks made their collegiate debuts in the match as freshman and Orange, Calif., native Lauren Gross registered kills on both of her attempts late in the second set, while freshman libero and League City, Texas product Haley Jacob entered in the same period as a server.
Among other notable UO efforts, senior outside hitter Emilee Sisco had four kills in her second match for the Ducks after she transferred from the University of Colorado last spring.
Looking ahead, Missouri State and San Francisco play at 12:30 p.m. Saturday to close the morning session. San Francisco returns to face Eastern Washington at 4:30 p.m., for the second of the two free, non-Duck matches of the day. The tourney concludes with the Oregon vs. Missouri State contest at 7 p.m. Saturday night, and fans can get two tickets for the price of one if they show a Bi-Mart card at the Mac Court ticket window.
