EUGENE - In similarly convincing fashion, the No. 14 University of Oregon (4-0) claimed its fourth straight sweep of the season vs. Seattle (1-3), Friday night at McArthur Court.
The Ducks won by a 25-9, 25-7, 25-13 count over the Redhawks, and the balanced UO offense and defense all shared in the win with only one player notching double-digit figures in kills, blocks or digs.
On offense, freshman Katherine Fischer had a career-high nine kills to pace UO and led to a personal season-best .368 hitting mark. The Los Altos, Calif., native was followed in the kills column by seniors Neticia Enesi (7, .667) and Sonja Newcombe (6, .429), sophomore Dana Stephenson (5, .308) and freshman Lauren Gross (4, 1.000).
"I'm feeling more and more comfortable out there," Fischer said. "We're a really young team, but we're adjusting to each other really well, and we owe a lot of it to the seniors. It's fun when you can play in sync like that, and we still have lots of room to grow."
Senior setter Nevena Djordjevic logged 31 assists among UO's 39 kills - her fourth straight match with +30 assists in as many appearances.
On defense, junior outside hitter Heather Meyers came up with a team-season high 11 digs, and Fischer and freshman libero Kellie Kawasaki added eight and seven, respectively. The defense also combined on an impressive, season-high block tally (16), and seven players had three or more, including Enesi (5), Djordjevic (4), Fischer (4) and Stephenson (4).
Meyers paced UO with three aces - her third match already this season with +3 - and five others had single aces.
Team-wise, UO hit .392 - its second-highest mark of the season behind its .419 mark vs. Missouri State last weekend in the Oregon Classic finale - while Seattle hit -.043. The Ducks also held advantages in kills (39-19), assists (36-17), aces (8-3), digs (42-28) and blocks (16-3).
The Redhawks' stat leaders included Cristin Richards (6 kills, 6 digs, 2 blocks, 7 points), Kelly Biette (.286, 2 blocks), Jamie Mellies (17 assists, 1 ace) and Emily Deleissegues (6 digs).
Seattle's 29 points was the fewest by a Duck opponent in head coach Jim Moore's fifth year at the helm, and Friday's victory also raised UO's non-conference regular season record to 48-3 in that span.
"Anytime you hit almost .400 and can hold the other team to a negative figure you have to be pleased," Moore said. "We did everything well, and it was nice to see everybody play a part. Our liberos all played great, and we were able to try some new things offensively that also worked well."
Glancing at the all-time UO record books, Enesi climbed to seventh all-time for UO in career blocks (339). Her hitting mark Friday (.667) was also the third straight that she has hit .636 or better (.636, .727, .667), and she had eight kills in each of the prior two matches.
Looking ahead, UO plays at the University of Portland, Sunday September 6 at 2 p.m., then returns home to host Portland State, Tuesday, September 8 at 7 p.m. Fans can pick up 'Bi-Mart $2 Day' coupons at area stores to received admission for the latter match for only $2.
