CORVALLIS, Ore. - In its Pacific-10 Conference opener Saturday, the UO softball team (8-17, 0-1) lost another hard-fought game, 2-1, to Oregon State in the first installment of The Civil War Sponsored by Your Northwest Dodge Dealers.
Junior Blair Williamson went 2-for-3 and knocked in UO's run in the fifth inning with a triple to right center field that scored freshman Lindsey Chambers who had singled just prior.
The Salem, Ore., native Williamson (2-for-3) ultimately matched her season high in hits in her 13th start of the season.
Also at the plate for UO, leadoff hitter and sophomore Cortney Kivett went 2-for-4 and made her first appearance for the Ducks at third base. Sophomore designated player Monique Fuiava went 1-for-3 in the cleanup spot, and junior first baseman Carlyn Re also hit safely (1-for-3).
Freshman Samantha Skillingstad pitched her team-best seventh complete game of the season Saturday, struck out
three, walked one, allowed four hits and two earned runs in her six
innings.
The Beavers (14-13, 1-0) got on the board in the first inning on a Paige Lowe home run, then scored again in the fifth on an RBI single by Dani Chisholm to go back ahead. For the game, OSU left only three runners on base - two in the fifth and one in the third.
The Ducks stranded six runners in the game, including two in the second inning when Fuiava led off with a single, and Re added her hit through the right side with one out. In the fifth, after the Ducks scored their run with two outs, Cortney Kivett followed with a single to third base before the inning was ended with an infield groundout. The Ducks again tried to tie matters in the top of the seventh when after two outs, Lindsey Chambers walked, advanced to second on Williamson's second hit - a single - and a wild pitch advanced the runners to second and third before a fly to left field ended the inning.
Saturday also marked the end of junior Neena Bryant's team-season high nine-game hitting streak, as the Placentia, Calif., native went 0-for-3. Cortney Kivett now owns the current long streak (4) - her personal season best.
On the mound for Oregon State, Kelly Dyer pitched a complete game, struck out two, walked one, allowed seven hits and one earned run.
With Saturday's outcome, the Ducks still hold a 78-77-1 edge in the series dating back to 1974. The two teams will play again in Eugene on Friday-Saturday, April 10-11 at 4 p.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
Looking ahead, UO returns home to host Seattle (6-9) at Howe Field, Tuesday, March 24 for a doubleheader vs. Seattle that starts at 1 p.m. The game is a BiMart $2 - Twin Dress Tuesday. Fans that dress up in pairs can get into both games at the price of $2.
