Ducks Defeat No. 39 Colorado, 4-3
02/08/09 | Women's Tennis
EUGENE, Ore. - The Oregon women's tennis team showed some serious grit on Sunday morning at the Student Tennis Center, winning four of six singles matches to win 4-3 and defeat their second-straight ranked opponent, No. 39 Colorado.
After dropping the doubles point, the Ducks needed four singles matches to pull out the win and that is exactly what they got - but it didn't look that way to start with.
Colorado took down the first two singles matches to finish, at No. 2 and No. 4 to take a 3-0 lead in the dual. But Siobhan Cavan put the Ducks on the board with her critical 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 6 singles.
Then it was down to No. 1, No. 3 and No. 5 singles to come through for the Ducks.
Carmen Seremeta was the first of the Ducks to win on the left side of the Student Tennis Center, sweeping through the third set of her match to win 6-4, 3-6, 6-0.
Pavlina Smatova fell into an early hole at No. 3 singles, down 5-2 in the first set, but the sophomore rallied to win three straight to tie it up 5-5. After a 6-6 draw moved the match into a seven-point tiebreaker, Smatova dominated, winning 7-0 to take the first set. She continued her strong play in the second set to 6-2.
The day was decided at No. 5 singles where Stephanie Macfarlane won after dropping the first set. Macfarlane lost the opening frame 6-2 but finished strong, even with all the pressure on her, to win 2-6, 6-3, 6-1.
The Ducks should climb the national rankings after a stellar weekend home stand that saw No. 49 New Mexico and No. 39 Colorado fall to No. 58 ranked Oregon. The Ducks have a weekend off before hosting another set of tough teams, with Ohio State and Washington State coming to Eugene.
