SAN DIEGO - The University of Oregon softball team (6-10) pushed unbeaten and No. 12 Missouri (11-0) to nine innings before falling, 8-7, in the first game of the San Diego Classic Friday afternoon at SDSU Softball Stadium.
With the game tied 6-6 at the end of seven innings, both teams scored a run in the eighth inning, and Missouri scored once again in the ninth to go back up, 8-7.
UO responded in the bottom half of the ninth by loading the bases thanks to a pair of walks, while the lead runner started the inning at second base because of the international tiebreaker rule, but a swinging strikeout ended the game.
For UO, sophomore third baseman Ashley Kivett went 2-for-4 with 4 RBI and a walk, and junior first baseman Carlyn Re went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Sophomore catcher Kaitlin Vitek also reached via two walks.
On the mound, Duck starter Sam Skillingstad pitched the opening 6 1/3 innings, struck out a career high 10, walked four, allowed nine hits, and three of her six allowed were earned. Senior Melissa Rice (0-3) pitched the final 2.2 innings, and struck out three, walked two and none of her runs allowed were earned.
After UO led 1-0 in the second inning, the Tigers answered with two runs in the third and fifth innings to go up 4-1. After Oregon scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to go up 6-4, Missouri added two more runs in the seventh inning to send the game to extra innings.
UO's scored its first run in the third inning on an RBI single by Ashley Kivett to center field, and she also knocked in three runs with her first career triple in the fifth inning. UO's two other runs in its five-run fifth both came with the bases loaded on a catcher's interference call and an error by the shortstop.
The Ducks return to action immediately Friday night and face host San Diego State (6-8) at 8 pm. Fans can watch the nightcap with SDSU by clicking here with the KCR campus radio station team of Tad Dixon and Sonny Sanfilippo calling the action.
