SAN DIEGO - The University of Oregon softball team (6-12) dropped another hard-fought contest in Saturday's lone game of the San Diego Classic to Colorado State (11-8), 1-0.
UO looked to tie the game, 1-1, in the bottom of the sixth inning when sophomore Monique Fuiava flied out to center field, and junior Neena Bryant tagged at third base and appeared to beat the throw home but was called out on an inning-ending double play.
On the mound, freshman Mikayla Endicott threw her first collegiate complete game, and struck out a career-high six, walked one, allowed six hits, and her run allowed was unearned.
At the plate for UO, senior shortstop Sari-Jane Jenkins went 2-for-3, while Bryant and sophomore second baseman Cortney Kivett went 1-for-3.
Bryant stole her team-leading 14th base of the season, and entered the weekend ranked second in the Pac-10 with her 12 in the first 15 games of the season.
UO also looked to score in the first inning when Sari-Jane Jenkins singled with one out, stole her sixth second base of the season, and advanced to third on a groundout to second base, but the following batter popped to first base. The Ducks also put Cortney Kivett on in the sixth inning with one out after after an error by the shortstop on a grounder. She advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt but was stranded on a pop fly to end the inning.
Colorado State scored its lone in the first inning after the opening
hitter singled, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and fly to center,
then scored on an errant throw by the third baseman to first base on a
grounder with two outs.
The Rams also threatened in the sixth inning
when the opening runner singled and eventually moved to third, while
another runner reached second with two outs, but Endicott struck out
the final batter of the inning on three pitches. In the third inning,
CSU also had runners on first and second base with only one out, but
Endicott forced a first-pitch pop to shortshotp, then struck out
cleanup hitter Ashley Munoz swinging.
Looking ahead, UO returns for final day action in the tourney Sunday at the San Diego State Softball Field, and faces Utah and UC Davis at 9 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.
