CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - The UO softball team (6-8) shutout Georgia Tech, 3-0, to get back on the winning track in final day action Saturday afternoon at the Cathedral City Classic near Palm Springs.
The Ducks wasted little time vs. the returning NCAA qualifier Georgia Tech with a run in the first and third innings, and another in the sixth inning.
For UO (6-8), senior shortstop Sari-Jane Jenkins matched her season high in hits (3) in her 3-for-3 day with two runs, and UO's stolen base career leader also stole her third base of the season and 83rd of her career.
Freshman pitcher Sam Skillingstad logged her sixth complete game in nine starts, walked one, and allowed four hits in her first collegiate shutout. She also struck out seven ? her sixth game of '09 with +6 strikeouts.
UO's first run of the day came in the first inning after Jenkins singled to lead off, stole second and advanced to third on the catcher's throwing error, then scored on Cortney Kivett's sacrifice bunt.
The Ducks added another run in the third inning when Jenkins singled and continued to second base on an error by the centerfielder who mishandled the ball. On consecutive wild pitches, she advanced to third then scored.
In the sixth inning, junior centerfielder Neena Bryant singled with one out, then scored on a double by sophomore designated player Moniue Fuiava to right field ? UO's other two players to hit safely in the contest.
For Georgia Tech (7-4), starting pitcher Jessica Coan struck out six, walked two and gave up five hits and one of her three runs allowed was earned in her six-inning complete game. At bat, four Tech batters hit safely with one hit each.
Overall, the Yellow Jackets stranded six runners in the game, including two in the fourth when they put runners on via a walk and single with one out, but Skillingstad responded by forcing a pop to shortstop and striking out the final batter of the inning looking.
Oregon's blanking was its third of the season after it ended its opening tourneys in Tempe and Las Vegas the last two weekends with 3-0 and 14-0 wins over Wagner and Southern Mississippi, respectively.
Looking ahead, UO travels to the San Diego Classic next Friday-Sunday, February 27-March 1, and faces No. 17 Missouri and No. 24 San Diego State on Friday, Colorado State on Saturday, and Utah and UC Davis on Sunday.
