STANFORD, Calif.- No. 28 Stanford won its third straight match with a 5-2 victory over Oregon on Saturday afternoon at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium.
For the second dual in row, the Ducks were able to win the doubles point, but again could not sustain that momentum in singles action.
The Cardinal heads into its final contest of the regular season with an 11-8 mark. The Ducks remain winless at 0-6 in the Pac-10 and fall to 11-13 overall.
Oregon will end its regular season at 1 p.m. next Saturday, April 19, playing Washington in Seattle.
"It was very positive this week to sweep the doubles point in the Bay Area against two of the premier programs in the country," Director of Tennis NIls Schyllander said. "I think we are growing as a team with every match we play."
Stanford looked to have an early advantage in doubles play as the team of Richard Wire and Gregory Hirshman defeated Francisco Gallardo and Stephen Wiechert, 8-2 on court three. But Oregon evened the score as Geoff Embry and Romeo Mortera defeated Stanford's Alex Clayton and Ted Kelly, 8-6.
Alex Cornelissen and Marcos Verdasco then clinched the doubles point for the Ducks with a 9-8 marathon victory over Kevin Kaiser and Blaker Muller at the top spot.
The Cardinal then jumped out to a commanding 3-1 lead, thanks to straight-set singles victories from second-ranked Clayton over Verdasco (6-4, 6-2) at the No. 1 position, No. 95 Richard Wire (6-4, 6-3) over Gallardo at No. 2 and Kevin Kaiser (7-5, 6-2) over Mike Myrhed on court six.
