Ducks Sweep No. 38 Cougars

EUGENE, Ore. - The Oregon women's tennis team opened up its back-to-back Pacific-10 duals this week with a 7-0 sweep over No. 38 Washington State on Sunday afternoon at the Student Tennis Center.
The No. 60 Ducks improve to 9-8 on the year and 2-1 in conference with the victory. This was the second time Oregon has played Washington State this year, avenging a 5-3 non-conference loss in Pullman on Feb. 29. The Cougars fall to 9-8 overall and 0-5 in the Pac-10.
Oregon started things well winning the doubles point as the team of Claudia Hirt and Carmen Seremeta defeated Washington State's Aleskandra Stefanova and Bianca Selaru at the No. 2 spot by the score of 8-3. The tandem is now 6-4 on the year. At the No. 3 position, the Oregon pairing of Stephanie Mcfarlane and Ana Cecilia Olivos defeated WSU's Aleksandra Cekic and Jessica Gomez, 8-3. The Cougars' tandem of Ekaterina Burduli and Ekaterina Kamendova did defeat Oregon's Celine Rolly and Anna Powaska at the No. 1 position, 8-1.
Oregon swept the singles matches, with both Powaska and Hirt winning in three sets, while the rest of the lineup won in straight sets.
Playing in the top position of the lineup, Rolly defeated No. 54 Burduli, 6-1, 6-4, while at the No. 2 position, Seremeta also won in two sets, 6-1, 6-3, over Stefanova. Seremeta now brings her singles record to 11-6 on the year.
Powaska went to three sets with Kamendova at the No. 3 position, but prevailed, 7-5, 3-6, 1-0 (8). Mcfarlane became the second Oregon player to get to double-digit singles victories this season with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Selaru at the No. 4 spot. She now has a 10-7 record on the year.
At No. 5, Hirt defeated Cekic, 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (4), and at the No. 6 spot, Olivos sured up the sweep with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Gomez.
Oregon plays No. 35 Washington tomorrow at 10 a.m. at the Student Tennis Center.
