03/23/08 | Softball
EUGENE ? The pitching tandem of junior Melissa Rice and freshman Brittany Rumfelt pitched five no-hit innings Sunday as the University of Oregon softball team (22-11) coasted to an 8-0 win over Idaho State in the first game of their Cascade Clash doubleheader.
Oregon (22-11) won its eighth straight game also thanks to its offense that featured the team-leading sixth home runs of the season from junior centerfielder Neena Bryant and senior third baseman Joanna Gail ? also the 16th of their careers, respectively.
On Sunday, Gail tied her season high for RBIs (4) with her tally from a 2-for-2 day the second weekend of the season vs. Northwestern State that included a double and homer.
The Ducks jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning when junior center fielder Neena Bryant lined a towering shot over the left field fence that scored freshman second baseman Cortney Kivett and junior left fielder Sari-Jane Jenkins who had singled to lead off the game.
The Ducks scored four more runs in the third inning. With two outs, Bryant and senior shortstop Lovena Chaput walked, and freshman designated player Monique Fuiava followed with an RBI single up the middle. Gail added her three-run shot the next at-bat.
Oregon's final runs in the fifth inning came after Chaput walked and Fuiava singled to lead off. Gail followed with an RBI single down the right field line that scored Chaput, and Fuiava advanced to third, then scored in the next at-bat on a stolen base by pinch runner Hannah Barrill when the throw sailed to the second base side of the bag.
Overall for the game, five Ducks hits safely and multiple-hit games went to Fuiava and Gail who each had two hits.
Notching her eighth straight win, Rice (10-4) pitched four no-hit innings and struck out a season-high six and walked none. Freshman Brittany Rumfelt, saw her first action since late March and pitched a scoreless, hitless fifth inning with no walks or strikeouts.
The Bengals' starter Kandis Clesson pitched all four innings, gave up seven hits, walked four and struck out none, and seven of her eight runs allowed were earned.
Idaho State (1-17) had one batter reach base, designated player Christine Shollenberger, who advanced on a hit by pitch to open the second inning.
