03/26/08 | Softball
EUGENE, Ore. - Oregon finished the Cascade Clash unblemished, winning all eight of their games after sweeping UC Davis in a doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon to close out the tournament at Howe Field.
The Ducks, now 25-11 on the year and riding an 11-game winning streak into this weekend's Pac-10 opening action, defeated the Aggies 7-3 in game one, and shut out UC Davis by the score of 2-0 in game two.
Oregon was led by sophomore outfielder Neena Bryant, who finished her day a combined 5-for-6 with four RBIs, three runs scored, two home runs and one double.
The Ducks' starting centerfielder cranked a line drive over the right field wall in her first at-bat of game one, and then went the opposite direction during the fourth inning to give the Ducks a 2-0 lead.
UC Davis put up a combined three runs in the fifth and sixth innings to take its first and only lead, but Oregon answered back with a monster sixth inning, posting five runs on the board.
Singles for Ashley and Courtney Kivett led off the inning, while Sari-Jane Jenkins reached on an error to load the bases for Bryant. Once again the Placentia, Calif., native delivered with an RBI single. Lovena Chaput's single combined with an UC Davis catching error cleared the bases on the following play, while a RBI single from Joanna Gail produced Oregon's final score of the game.
Senior Alicia Cook got the win, allowing just three runs on four hits while striking out six. She is now 10-7 on the year. UC Davis' Alex Holmes took the loss after allowing seven runs (six earned) on seven hits.
Bryant was a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate for the Ducks.
In game two, junior Melissa Rice pitched seven shutout innings to lead Oregon to its 2-0 victory. Rice allowed just four hits and one walk in 26 batters faced, while Bryant and Gail did the damage on offense.
Oregon scored its first run in the first inning as a Bryant double to left field brought home Courtney Kivett.
The Ducks held onto their one-run lead before adding some insurance in the fourth as Gail led off the inning with a solo shot to right field.
The Poway, Calif., native finished game two 3-for-3, while Bryant was 2-for-3.
Rice earned her 11th win of the season, while UC Davis starter Jessica Hancock dropped to 10-9 after surrendering two runs on six hits.
The Ducks take their 11-game winning streak to Seattle on Friday, playing their Pac-10 opener against the Huskies at 1 p.m. Oregon will end the weekend in Los Angeles, playing UCLA at 3 p.m. on Saturday and noon on Sunday.
