Ducks pick up first Pac-10 win against the Wildcats, 6-1

Eugene, Ore.? The Ducks take the victory, 6-1 against the Arizona Wildcats at the Student Tennis Center after, bringing their season record to an even 8-8.

The win is coach Paul Reber's first career Pac-10 victory, and first Pac-10 win for the Ducks in two seasons.

The Ducks won two out three doubles matches to pick up the doubles point. The No. 3 team of Ana Cecilia Olivos and Stephanie Macfarlane cruised to an 8-0 victory against Ariane Masschelein and Jane Huh.

After a hard fought match at the No. 2 spot, Carmen Seremeta and Claudia Hirt defeated Natalia Toporowska and Katie Orletsky 8-6.

After the doubles point was already won the match at the No.1 spot, between Celine Rolly and Anna Powaska for the Ducks and Claire Rietsch and Danielle Steinberg for the Wildcats, went to a tie break at 5-5. Steinberg and Rietsch won the tie break 7-3, and the match.

As singles play began, the Ducks played steadily, winning three out of the first six matches.

The first finisher was Seremeta at the No.2 spot, defeating Rietsch 6-3, 6-4. The match at the No.5 spot finished next, with Olivos surpassing Huh, 6-3, 6-3.

Hirt and Orletsky went all three sets, Hirt won the first 6-4 but Orletsky won the last two 6-3, 6-3, to pick up the victory in the No. 6 spot.

At the No. 3 spot Powaska and Toporowska both fought hard the whole match. Toporowska won the first set 7-6, but Powaska won the second 6-1 to extend the match. Powaska took the momentum from the second set and won the third 6-4, and the match.

At the No. 1 spot Rolly and Steinberg battled three sets, with Rolly coming out on top 7-5, 3-6, 6-1. The No. 4 match between Macfarlane and Masschelein also went three sets, with Macfarlane winning 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.

Next week the Ducks host the Washington schools. Oregon plays Washington State on Sunday, March 23^rd, and Washington the next day on Monday, March 24^th.
