12/05/08 | Women's Basketball
EUGENE, Ore. - Oregon outscored Montana in the second half, but that effort couldn't make up an early double-digit deficit, as the Ducks fell, 60-52, on Thursday night at Mac Court.
The Ducks (3-3) trailed by as many as 19 in the second half, but with offensive surges from Nicole Canepa and Ellyce Ironmonger, that lead was to cut to 10 on three separate occasions.
Oregon finally slashed the Grizzlies (4-2) lead to single digits after a Jasmin Holliday block and Amanda Johnson defensive rebound, put Oregon on the break. Led by Darriel Gaynor, who fed Micaela Cocks under the basket, the Ducks were within 52-44 with 3:43 remaining.
Gaynor again made an impact knocking down a three-pointer from the top of the arc to make the score 58-52 with 21.3 seconds to go, but Montana's Mandy Morales calmly sank two free throws to ice the game.
Oregon opened the second half on a 5-0 run, and had several players set new season highs. Canepa scored all nine of her points in the second half, while Ironmonger scored six points in the final 20 as well. Ironmonger also had a game and season high 10 rebounds.
Cocks led Oregon with 11 points, while Lindsey Saffold added a career-high nine points. Gaynor scored a career-best eight.
Montana had four players reach double figures led by Morales (14), Britney Lohman (11), Lauren Beck (11) and Sarah Ena (10).

Morales' six points and six assists paced the Grizzlies in the first 20 minutes, while Beck and Ena had seven points and three rebounds apiece.
Montana held Oregon without a field goal until the 16:30 mark when Saffold scored in the paint.
The Ducks were down double digits, 15-5, by the 12:03 after two free-throw makes from Shaunte Nance-Johnson.
