Shorthanded Ducks Fall to Aztecs, 5-2

SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Oregon's two seniors picked up singles win but the rest of the team could not break through as the No. 31Ducks fell to the No. 65 San Diego State Aztecs, 5-2, in a non-conference dual match Friday afternoon.
The Ducks had chances late to gain the advantage, but the rest of the team could not follow the upperclassmen's lead as Dominika Dieskova and Monica Hoz de Vila were the only Ducks to win their matches.
Dieskova topped Alesya Vidov at the top position handily, 6-4, 6-2, while Hoz de Vila polished of Esther Cadua, 6-4, 7-6 (4).
Due to the injury to Claudia Hirt, the bottom of the lineup stalwart, the Ducks started walk-on Tina Snodgrass at the No. 6 position and were also forced to shuffle their doubles lineup, placing Snodgrass with Carmen Seremeta at No. 3 doubles.
The Ducks dropped the doubles point despite the victory by the pair of Dieskova and Ana Cecilia Olivos at the top spot. The all-time winningest doubles team in Oregon history took their match in close fashion, defeating the pair of Vidov and Milana Yusupov, 9-8 (8).
The Ducks trailed 3-0 before Dieskova and Hoz de Vila picked up their wins as the Aztecs won matches at the No. 6 position and the No. 2 position to begin the singles portion of the match.
With the Ducks trailing by one after the seniors' wins, they needed both Carmen Seremeta and Anna Powaska to gain victories in their matches to get the comeback victory.
Unfortunately, Seremeta would fall in three sets, 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 to Holly Bagshaw and Powaska would be finished off in tight fashion, 7-5, 6-4, by Yusupov.
The Ducks continue their stay in San Diego when they take on the Toreros of the University of San Diego tomorrow at 10 a.m.
