Embry Lone Duck Victor in 6-1 Loss to UCLA
03/30/07 | Men's Tennis
LOS ANGELES -- Freshman Geoff Embry defeated UCLA's Jeremy Drean, 6-2, 6-4, but the win would be the only victory for the Ducks as they fell 6-1 to the UCLA Bruins Friday afternoon.
Playing out of the No. 5 position, the Phoenix, Ariz. native was forced to battle through the match even though the final score was convincing. The win marked Embry's 18th win of the year, leading the team, and was only Drean's sixth loss.
At the No. 3 position, Ric Mortera was taken to the longest super tiebreak of the season for any Duck, but he ultimately fell 4-6, 7-5, (15-13) to No. 65 Chris Surapol.
All of the other Ducks were defeated in straight sets by their more veteran Bruin adversaries.
Marcos Verdasco was defeated at the top position by No. 5 ranked Benjamin Kohlloeffel, 6-2, 6-0.
Alex Cornelissen fell at the No. 2 positon, 6-4, 6-3, by No. 40 ranked Haythem Abid and the loss clinched the match for the Bruins.
In the doubles portion of the match, freshman Francisco Gallardo and Marcos Verdasco valiantly battled the No. 13 ranked doubles pair in the nation, Phillip Gruendler and Kohlloeffel, forcing a tiebreak. They would fall in the tiebreak 8-0 however, and lose the match 8-7 (0).
UCLA won the other pair of doubles matches in convincing fashion as Abid and Surapol defeated Cornelissen and Stephen Wiechert, 8-2 at the No. 2 position and Mathieu Dehaine and Drean defeated Embry and Ric Mortera, 8-3.
Oregon will face USC tomorrow at Noon in Los Angeles.
