Ducks Pound Pacific, 6-1
02/16/07 | Men's Tennis
The Ducks won the doubles point without the benefit of winning at the No. 1 position for the first time this year, as Francisco Gallardo and Marcos Verdasco defeated Alan Kelly and Robert Price, 8-4, at the No. 2 postion and Mortera and Stephen Wiechert defeated Vegerd Veskimagi and Ahad Ebrahim, 8-2 at the No. 3.
"It was good to have Ric [Mortera] back in the lineup today because he was flying around the court," director of tennis Nils Schyllander said. "Just having him back seemed to give the team energy and we played well as a result of that."
In singles, the Ducks captured five of the six matches for the final margin of victory with only Verdasco falling at the top position.
Embry remained undefeated in singles with his quick 6-0, 6-4 victory over Austin Kakar. The freshman continued his hot start, winning his ninth straight match.
Having fallen in doubles with Embry, Alex Cornelissen rebounded with a vengeance, taking his match 6-2, 6-0, over Vladimir Zdravkovic who was part of the pair that had bested he and Embry earlier.
At the No. 3 position, Gallardo rebounded from a first set loss to take his match in a super tiebreak, 4-6, 7-6 (1), (4).
Mike Myrhed and Eric Pickard, the only non-freshman on the courts, also picked up straight set victories. Myrhed bested Kelly 6-0, 6-4 while Pickard picked up the 6-3, 6-2 win over Ebrahim.
The Ducks will next take on the Santa Clara Broncos tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. in Santa Clara, Calif.
