The Ducks got the match off to a good start by winning two of three doubles matches to earn the doubles point.
Arron Spencer and Markus Schiller played solid tennis and won their match over Bobby Rasmussen and Jan Macek, 8-4. A pair of Duck freshman put a solid doubles match together to win the point as Mike Myrhed and Gustavo Loza put together a solid, 8-4 win over Brian Brogan and A.J. Kerin.
“This was a great win for us,” Kowalik said. “We wanted to get some revenge after they beat us 5-2 last season and starting our season 2-0 is a good way to open the year.”
The Ducks only loss in doubles play was an 8-5 setback for Thomas Bieri and Fernando Freitas at the hands of Kevin McQuaid and Blane Shields.
In singles play the Ducks won at the top four spots losing only at numbers five and six.
Schiller playing at number one, who earlier in the day was the first Duck off the court in a quick straight sets victory was the last Duck standing against
Thomas Bieri was a straight sets winner over McQuaid, 6-4, 6-4. Arron Spencer was solid in the number three spot winning 6-2, 6-4.
In perhaps the most intense match of the night, one the crowd was involved in from the first serve to the last point Myrhed defeated Shields 6-4, 6-4 in the four spot. Myrhed rolled off seven straight games to close out the first set and take a 5-0 lead in the second, before Shields rolled off four straight games of his own.
“Mike played a solid match,” Kowalik said. “He came out and maybe had a rough spot in the second set but he battled through it and got his stroke back. If that stretch is the worst tennis Mike plays I will be very happy.”
At number five and six the Ducks fell in a pair of tough matches. Gustavo Loza playing in his first collegiate match fell 6-3, 6-2 to Tommy Hicks. Eric Pickard filling in at number five for Fernando Freitas fell to Rasmussen 7-5, 0-6, 2-6.
The Ducks return to action February 4th when they face Gonzaga beginning at
