Djuric Powers Ducks to Sweep of Portland

EUGENE, Ore. ? Collectively, the Oregon volleyball team has been sharper during the early part of the season. But even a trying Game 3 couldn't derail a sweep of the University of Portland, 30-20, 30-19 and 30-28, on Tuesday night at McArthur court.

“We didn't play our best and still came away with a 3-0 result,” said head coach Jim Moore. “That says a lot about this team.”

Oregon teams past may have wilted when trailing late in a game, but the Ducks (5-0) escaped from a 25-22 deficit in the third and ended the match with flare from a pair of freshman.

Up 29-28 in the potential clinching game, rookie libero Katie Swoboda made what has become one of her trademark circus digs, and Mira Djuric put away the final point with a screamer that was never in doubt from the moment she cocked her arm for the attack. Swoboda finished with a match-high 16 digs, while Djuric led all players with 15 kills and 19.5 points.

Portland (1-5) came to life in Game 3 and matched UO with 17 kills in the frame. Oregon was the more efficient side, however, hitting at a .438 clip compared to .195 for the Pilots. For the match, the Ducks hit .305 and UP .111.

Junior Erin Little also had a solid outing for Oregon with seven kills in nine attempts (.778), nine digs and six block assists.

As a team, the Ducks had 13.0 total blocks.

Oregon will head out on the road for the first time this season, starting with Portland State on Thursday at 7 p.m. That match is the first of four at the PSU hosted Crowne Plaza Showcase.
