Nealy Tied for 57th at NCAA Championships
05/17/05 | Women's Golf
SUNRIVER, Ore. ? Oregon's Johnna Nealy shot a 5-over 76 -- a round that included a controversial one stroke penalty for slow play -- and was tied for 57th following the first round of the NCAA Women's Golf Championships played Tuesday at the 6,312-yard, par-71 Meadows Course.
"Johnna played a pretty solid round of golf," said Oregon coach Shannon Rouillard. "She only had two birdies, but she was lighting the edges of the hole on fire with the putter and couldn't get any to drop until the last one."
Nealy, who started her round on the back nine, had four bogeys, a double bogey and two birdies Tuesday. After starting her round with three pars, the senior from Grants Pass, Ore., bogeyed three of her next four holes, but sandwiched a birdie in between her second and third bogeys. She was 2-over after her first nine.
Nealy got rolling on the front side with five straight pars, but found her only real trouble of the day on the par 4 sixth hole, her 15th of the day, where she double bogeyed. Then on the next hole, Nealy was assessed a one stroke penalty for taking nine seconds too long at the green to hit her chip shot. She finished the hole in four strokes, but the stoke penalty for slow play effectively gave her a bogey.
She dropped another shot on her 17th hole, the tricky par-3 eighth, to drop to 6-over on the day, but recovered to roll a long birdie putt in on her last hole to finish with a 76.
"It (the penalty stroke) was kind of controversial, but Johnna held her composure and finished with a birdie," said Rouillard. "Besides the penalty, I'm pretty optimistic about the remainder of the championships."
Carolina Llano of Pepperdine shot a 2-under 69 for the first round individual lead. Dewi Schreefel of USC, at 70, was the only other golfer under par Tuesday. Nine golfers were tied for third at even-par 71.
USC held a slim one-shot lead on UCLA. The Trojans shots a 3-over 287, while the Bruins were at 288. Auburn was third at 290. Five of the top 10 teams were from the Pacific-10 Conference with Washington (tie-fifth/292), California (seventh/295) and Stanford (tie-10th/300) joining the Trojans and Bruins.
The second of four rounds will be played Wednesday.
