Rain Delays Don't Derail Stanford Softball, Ducks Fall 9-5
04/17/05 | Softball
EUGENE ? The game started one hour and 40 minutes late due to rain and was delayed two times totaling one hour, 48 minutes, but the eighth-ranked Stanford Cardinal softball team eventually defeated No. 25 Oregon, 9-5, in a Pacific-10 Conference game at Howe Field Sunday afternoon. With the win, Stanford secures the series for the first time in two seasons and improves to 31-7 overall, 6-2 Pac-10 while Oregon falls to 25-16, 3-7.
"It's disappointing that we scored 17 runs this weekend and it wasn't enough to win," Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen said. "I thought we really had great energy today, played very well offensively and percerviered through the conditions. But we struggled defensively. The good thing is that's something we can work on and be better at."
Junior Beth Boskovich led the way offensively for the Ducks, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Her fifth inning home run was her second in as many days and moved her into a tie for 10th all-time at Oregon with 15 career home runs. Freshman third baseman T.J. Eadus hit her third home run of the season ? which was also her first hit in conference play ? to give the Ducks a 3-0 lead after the first inning.
The Cardinal took the lead in the bottom of the third inning, scoring four runs on one hit and an Oregon error. In the fourth inning, third baseman Michelle Smith drove in two more runs with an RBI single through the left side that put Stanford ahead 6-3.
Suzie Barnes and the Ducks got a run back in the fourth inning, pulling within two runs after an RBI by Barnes scored Eadus. Boskovich's solo home run in the fifth brought the Ducks within a run, 6-5, but the game was then delayed 45 minutes because of rain and poor field conditions. After play resumed, junior Dani Baird singled and advanced to second on a throwing error by Stanford second baseman Tricia Aggabao, but Stanford pitcher Becky McCullough (13-1) forced a groundout and Aggabao made up for the error with an impressive defensive play to get Oregon pinch hitter Kristi Leiter out to end the inning.
Smith added her fourth RBI of the game with a two-run home run in the sixth inning that extended Stanford's lead to 8-5 and a Meghan Sickler RBI in the seventh made it 9-5. Stanford reliever Laura Severson retired the side in the seventh as the Cardinal finished their Oregon road swing 3-0.
The Ducks are home again next weekend, hosting Oregon State on Saturday and Sunday. Both games begin at 1 p.m. at Howe Field.
