Offense And Defensive Effort Lead To Sweep Of Portland State For Duck Softball
04/20/05 | Softball
PORTLAND ? The Duck offense had 20 hits and the pitching staff combined to allow just three runs as the University of Oregon softball team swept Portland State in a non-conference doubleheader at Erv Lind Stadium in Portland Wednesday afternoon. The Ducks came from behind to win 4-1 in the first game before winning game two 6-2. With the two victories, Oregon improves to 27-16 overall, 3-7 Pac-10 while the Vikings fell to 13-22 overall, 7-5 Pacific Coast Softball Conference. Oregon pitcher Alicia Cook (Elmira) improved to 8-4 with the game one victory while senior reliever Lindsey Kontra improved to 6-2 with the win in game two.
It was a banner day offensively for freshman T.J. Eadus, who was perfect from the plate, finishing the two games 5-for-5 with a walk, two doubles, a triple, two RBI and a run scored. First baseman Kristi Leiter improved her season average to .354 after going 4-for-7 with three runs scored and an RBI. In all, the Ducks had six extra base hits, including a 2-for-3, two double performance by sophomore Kayleen Hudson in the second game.
"We really played well today both offensively and defensively and that's something we really worked on after last weekend," Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen said. "It was important for us to play the way we are capable of playing and I thought we did that today. I am very pleased with our offensive production as well as how we played defensively."
In the first game, Portland State right fielder Kimi Daniel gave the Vikings the early lead, hitting a solo home run in the first inning, but Cook scattered just three hits over the next six innings to keep the Viking offense at bay.
Oregon senior Erin Goodell tied the game with an RBI double up the middle that scored Leiter to tie the game, 1-1, in the fourth inning. Later in the fourth, senior catcher Ashley Richards extended the Ducks' lead to 3-1 with a single up the middle that scored Eadus and right fielder Dani Baird.
Leiter, who finished the first game 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, drove in freshman Lovena Chaput in the fifth inning to make 4-1 for the Ducks, which was all Oregon needed for the game one victory.
Oregon jumped out to take the first lead of the second game when Chaput led off the game with a single through the right side and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by shortstop Breanne Sabol. Junior Beth Boskovich was out at first in the next play, but Chaput advanced to third on play and then scored on an error by Portland State third baseman Kayla Lewis to give Oregon a 1-0 lead. Leiter then singled up the middle and scored on a triple by Eadus in the Ducks' next at bat to extend the lead to 2-0.
It was much of the same in the second inning as Hudson doubled to lead off the inning and scored on an RBI single by Suzie Barnes to put Oregon ahead 3-0. Barnes then stole second and advanced to third on a deep fly ball by Chaput that was caught by Viking center fielder Whitney Olsen and Sabol drove Barnes in with an RBI up the middle to extend Oregon's lead to 4-0 after two innings.
Portland State struck in the third inning, scoring an unearned run on an RBI single by second baseman Lacey Gorman that scored Olsen, who had reached on an error by the Ducks to lead off the inning. The Vikings later loaded the bases, but Kontra, who relieved starter Amy Harris with two outs in the inning, forced a groundout by Lewis to end the inning.
Hudson hit her second double of the game to lead off the fourth inning. She then stole third and scored on the play after a throwing error by catcher Rose Rutledge and Oregon led 5-1 heading into the bottom of the fourth. In the fifth, Eadus made it 6-1 with an RBI double that scored Leiter.
Viking pitcher Mandy Hill narrowed the gap to 6-2 with an RBI in the bottom of the seventh inning, but Kontra struck out Gorman and Lewis to secure the sweep.
The Ducks return to conference action this weekend, hosting No. 9 Oregon State Saturday (1 p.m.) and Sunday (1 p.m.).
