04/17/05 | Women's Tennis
SPOKANE, Wash. ? Due to bad weather, the University of Oregon women's tennis team moved its match against Washington State to an indoor facility in Spokane Sunday. Despite the sudden change in plans, the Ducks (16-7, 3-5) took care of business, closing out the regular season with a confident 6-1 victory over the Cougars. Four of the six singles matches reached a third set with UO victorious in all four. The win solidified an Oregon postseason berth and put the Ducks in good position for a No. 2 seed at one of 16 regional sites.
"We were put in a tough situation today having to switch locations at the last second, "Oregon head coach Nils Schyllander said. "Like we have all season, the team kept its focus and came away with a big win."
Doubles play saw No. 45 Daria Panova and Dominika Dieskova improve to a team-best 22-9 overall with an 8-6 win over Washington State's Chris Martinez and Orsolya Sallai. The 22 victories ranks first all-time for single-season wins. Seniors Davina Mendiburu and Ester Bak defeated WSU's Amy Toth and Aleksandra Stefanova at No. 3, upping their dual mark to 17-5.
Four singles matches were pushed to a third set, with Oregon triumphant in all four. No. 49 Panova defeated No. 71 Burduli, 6-7, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 1 to improve to 15-7 in dual play. No. 81 Dieskova also improved to 15-7 with a straight set win at No. 2.
Mendiburu came from behind to take care of the Cougs' Martinez, 3-6, 6-1, 6-1. Mendiburu is now tops on the team with a 23-7 overall and 16-7 dual mark.
Jamie Marshall and Bak rounded out the Ducks' victories with wins at No. 4 and No. 6 respectively.
The Ducks travel to Ojai, Calif. next weekend for the Pac-10 Championships, Thu.-Sun. The NCAA Championships begin May 13 at a site to be determined.
