Third-Ranked Bears Narrowly Defeat No. 25 Softball, 6-5
04/15/05 | Softball
EUGENE ? Oregon senior Erin Goodell had a career day and junior pitcher Amy Harris (12-7) turned in another fine performance, but the third-ranked California Bears capitalized on three Duck errors to come from behind and defeat the No. 25 University of Oregon softball team 6-5 in front of 424 fans at Howe Field Friday afternoon. With the win, the Bears improve to 38-5 overall, 5-2 Pacific-10 Conference while Oregon fell to 25-14, 3-5.
"This is extremely disappointing because I thought we did what we needed to do to win," Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen said. "But on the other hand, I am very pleased with how we gave ourselves chances in every at bat. We really battled until the end and I'm proud of the team for that."
Goodell's fourth-inning bases-loaded triple disrupted the pitchers dual between Harris and starter Kelly Anderson, giving the Ducks the first lead of the game, 3-0. Goodell's triple came after Anderson walked Dani Baird, Ann Marie Topps and T.J. Eadus. With two outs and down 1-2 in the count, Goodell drove the ball to the center field fence, accounting for her second triple in as many games.
The Bears came right back in the top of the fifth inning after back to back Oregon errors put runners at first and third. Shortstop Chelsea Spencer then stole second and Harris walked Kaleo Eldredge to load the bases with one out. Second baseman Jessica Pamanian then hit right back to Harris who threw home to get Galindo for the second out. But in the next at-bat, Cal catcher Halie Woods hit a single to score two unearned runs and pull the Bears within a run, 3-2. Harris prevented Cal from taking the lead, forcing Emily Friedman to line out to third base for the third out.
In the sixth inning, Cal capitalized on a third Oregon error and tallied four hits to score four runs and extend its lead to 6-3.
Oregon sophomore Kristi Leiter and the Duck offense continued to chip away in the sixth as Leiter, who was pinch hitting for catcher Ashley Richards, hit an RBI triple down the right field line to score Topps, who led off the inning with a hard shot single to third base. Trailing by just two runs, Goodell recorded her fourth RBI of the game, driving in Leiter with a double to deep left center field to put the Ducks within a run, 6-5. Anderson, who was relieved by Kristina Thorson after Goodell's triple in the fourth inning, returned in the sixth inning after Thorson hit Oregon sophomore Suzie Barnes following Goodell's double. Anderson promptly struck out freshman Lovena Chaput to prevent the go-ahead run from scoring.
Harris retired the side in the top of the seventh inning and Oregon shortstop Breanne Sabol led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a single down the right field line, but Anderson retired the next three batters to secure the victory and earn her first save of the season. Thorson earned the victory, improving to 17-4 this season.
