Stanford Softball Shuts Down Ducks
04/16/05 | Softball
EUGENE ? The eighth-ranked Stanford Cardinal put the pressure on the 25th-ranked University of Oregon softball team early and often en route to a 17-7 Pacific-10 Conference victory in front of 313 fans at Howe Field Saturday afternoon. With the win, Stanford improves to 30-7 overall, 5-2 Pac-10 while the Ducks fell to 25-15, 3-6.
"It's difficult to get behind early, especially in this conference," Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen said. "We battled and we had opportunities, we just weren't able to make up that much ground."
Left fielder Lovena Chaput continued her impressive freshman campaign, going 3-for-4 with a home run, a double, three RBI and three runs scored. Junior Beth Boskovich hit her 14th career home run ? a three run shot in the seventh inning ? and finished the game 2-for-4 with four RBI and a run scored. Shortstop Breanne Sabol is now hitting .358 on the season after going 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
Things got going early for Stanford after Oregon starter Amy Harris (12-8) gave up a one-out single to Stanford shortstop Lauren Lappin and then hit both Michelle Smith and Leah Nelson to load the bases for Erin Howe. The Ducks then committed an error, allowing Lappin to score and second baseman Tricia Aggabao then drove in Smith and Nelson to give Stanford a 3-0 lead in the first inning.
The Cardinal added to its lead in the second inning, scoring a run on an RBI double by Lappin and produced three more in the third inning on a three-run home run by Anna Beardman to lead 7-0.
Chaput's solo home run in the bottom of the third inning got the Ducks on the board and Chaput scored her second run of the game on an RBI by Boskovich in the fifth as Oregon narrowed the gap, 7-2.
Stanford's offense broke things open in the seventh inning as they scored 10 runs on nine hits to take a 17-2 advantage heading into the bottom of the seventh inning. Oregon was able to cut the lead to 17-7 after Boskovich's home run and an RBI each by Suzie Barnes and Chaput, but Stanford starter Laura Severson returned with no outs and retired three of the next four batters to end the game.
Oregon and Stanford face off again tomorrow at Howe Field at 1 p.m.
