EUGENE ? The University of Oregon men's tennis team lost to No. 10 Stanford, 6-1, Saturday at the Student Tennis Center. After coming inches short of earning the doubles point, the Cardinal won five of six singles matches to seal the victory. The Ducks will try and end its eight-match losing streak next weekend when they travel to Los Angeles to take on top-25 ranked USC and UCLA.
Despite surrendering the doubles point, the Ducks played their strongest tennis of the season. At No. 1, Arron Spencer and Vlad Pino went toe-to-toe with defending national champs and No. 3-ranked Sam Warburg and K.C. Korkery, only to fall 8-6.
Thomas Bieri and Manuel Kost picked up an impressive 9-8 win at the No. 2 spot. The duo now ranks seventh all-time for career doubles win with 25.
The point came down to the No. 3 position as Sven Swinnen and Markus Schiller lost the tiebreaker to Stanford's Phil Sheng and Phil Kao, 9-8. Schiller, still recovering from a stress fracture in his foot, played today for the first time since early February.
In singles, Kost picked up a three-set win over Stanford's No. 91 Phil Sheng, 3-6, 7-6, (10-7), to improve to 4-5 in dual play.
No. 22 Sven Swinnen lost his second consecutive match, falling to Stanford's No. 2-ranked Sam Warburg. Swinnen is now 13-2 in dual play and 20-5 overall.
Oregon travels to Los Angeles next weekend to take on USC (Fri., 1:30 p.m.) and UCLA (Sat., 1 p.m.).
