Back To Back Home Runs Spark Offense As Duck Softball Wins Two At UNLV Desert Classic
02/12/05 | Softball
LAS VEGAS, Nev. ? A pair of back to back solo home runs in the sixth inning lifted the 13th-ranked Ducks to a 7-1 victory over Texas State at the UNLV Desert Classic in Las Vegas, Nev. With an 11-3 victory over UC Riverside earlier in the evening, Oregon improved to 5-1 overall this season.
Sophomore Suzie Barnes hit her first collegiate home run against Riverside and against Texas State, Barnes her hit second career home run to put Oregon ahead 2-1 after freshman Lovena Chaput led off the inning with a solo shot to tie the game, 1-1. Barnes was 4-for-6 with five runs scored, three RBI and two home runs in Oregon's two victories while Chaput finished the day 3-for-6 with a double, a triple, a home run and four runs scored.
"I couldn't be happier with how we battled today," Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen said. "We put pressure on them in the fifth inning and came back again in the sixth. I am very pleased with how we continued to believe we could do this."
Oregon had trailed 1-0 for most of the game as Texas State pitcher Katie Ann Trahan (3-3) limited the Ducks to just two hits before Oregon's offense came to life in the sixth. After giving up the two home runs, Trahan hit Oregon first baseman Beth Boskovich and committed a throwing error that allowed senior Ashley Richards to reach. Boskovich advanced on the play and later scored when Dani Baird bunted safely. The Ducks went ahead 4-1 when relief pitcher Olivia Henley hit Erin Goodell with the bases loaded.
Oregon added to its lead in the seventh inning after an RBI each by senior Ashley Richards and freshmen Kristi Jorgensen and T.J. Eadus.
Junior pitcher Amy Harris improved to 2-1 with the victory.
Oregon defeated UC Riverside behind 14 hits from the Duck offense. In her first start of the season, senior pitcher Ani Nyhus (1-0) picked up her first victory.
In the first inning, Riverside took a 1-0 lead after an RBI single down the left field line by third baseman Melissa Sanchez, but Oregon responded by scoring three runs. Chaput started the inning with a double down the right side and later scored on an RBI by Boskovich. Richards drove in shortstop Breanne Sabol with a sacrifice fly and sophomore Kristi Leiter scored Boskovich with a single up the middle to put the Ducks ahead 3-1.
A triple by Chaput in her second at bat scored Barnes and she later scored on an RBI single by Boskovich to extend Oregon's lead to 5-1.
Riverside cut the deficit to 5-3 in the fourth inning after an RBI each by April Murray and Mandi Salcido, but Oregon responded again, scoring two runs on an RBI single by Sabol and a sacrifice fly by Boskovich.
Junior Dani Baird, who was hitting for Sabol in the fifth inning, drove in Barnes with a line-drive single to add to Oregon's lead and Erin Goodell's sacrifice fly in the sixth inning scored Sabol to put the Ducks ahead 9-3. Barnes' two-run home run in the sixth inning put the Ducks ahead by eight runs and ended the game due to the mercy rule.
Oregon wraps up tournament play tomorrow, taking on No. 8 Michigan at 10:30 a.m. and Oklahoma State at 12:30 p.m.
